Alesis Multimix 8 USB

I just purchased the Alesis Multimix 8 USB. I have a Roland VS-880ex which has no mic preamps built in, thats why I bought the mixer, so I could use the 4 built in pre's that come with the Alesis. So this is what i'm trying to do;

Record 2 Guitars at the same time with 2 SM57's and run the SM57's into the mixer and then from the mixer to the Roland track recorder. I also want my M-Audio monitors to be hooked up so I can preview the 2 guitar tracks I just recorded. Once the guitars have been recorded, I want to record 1 bass with the SM57 and run it to the mixer and then to the track recorder as well. After the bass, I want to record maybe 2 vocal tracks (Vox and backup vox) with an AKG Perception 100 and have my headphones plugged in so our singer may listen to the tracks as they are being recorded. Once I have all that finished, I want to somehow take all the tracks from my Roland to my computer so I may edit them and touch them up a little.....


Any suggestions or detailed strategies on hooking this all up...?

Okay so I hooked up the mixer and ran one sm57 into mic input 1 and then the other into mic input 2 and then there is a MAIN MIX OUT which is a L and a R, so I ran one 1/4 TRS from the L MAIN MIX OUT to input 1 on the track recorder and another 1/4 TRS from the R MAIN MIX OUT to input 2 on the recorder which is cool cause now the signals are boosted where i want them the only problem is the track recorder only has 6 line inputs, and 2 are used up with 2 guitars and that means the bass will have a L and R on tracks 3 and 4 and then vox will have a L and R on tracks 5 and 6 so what i was thinking is to bouce the tracks if it'll work right.....so i'd have vox L and R bouced to one track and then bass L and R bounced to one track to free up some tracks now I don't know what to do with the guitars, I could record one guitar part and send the L and R signal to tracks 1 and 2 and then the other guitar part send the L and R signal to tracks 3 and 4 and then bounce them, but i don't like recording one guitar at a time so im stuck....

Here's my question..

Could I bounce and L and R signal to one track? If so what happens when i pan L or R on the track recorder itself, would it just work as one signal?

IM SO CONFUSED!!!!

Let me know if this mixer idea is more of a hassle then its worth, if it is i'll just take it back

Another problem I have is that when i hook up the mixer to the computer to use as an external sound card...it freezes the computer right away, plus i'm not the biggest Cubase LE fan which i know i could use something else, and the computer is in a different room and is the family computer, so my parents and siblings use it for stuff too!

While I do my stuff on a studio-in-a-box unit, my understanding is that if one is going to use a computer for tracking/mixing/mastering, the computer about has to be dedicated to that purpose only. It also helps to have lots of RAM--the more the better.

nah, you can do recording on a "normal use" computer.... it just wont be as easy/efficient as one using a dedicated recording pc.
