playback skip doesn't appear to be a latency issue

Upon playback of my recordings (only about 40 seconds or so...I was just testing the quality of sound I was getting) I am hearing some skips or slight drop outs in the audio feed.

Increasing the latency only changed the hit points of the skip/dropout by a little bit (would hit at 6 second intervals, then 8, then 10, etc).

Lowering the latency gave me a very distorted and fuzzy feed even through the monitor (not even on a recording). When I put latency at 1.5ms it doesn't seem to be affecting my system resources at all, but I get that crazy sound.

Any ideas what this is all about?

I had recorded another track a week before and didn't notice any kind of signal problems. Where is this coming from?

Thanks. I'm glad to answer any questions about set-up etc. I did several searches but couldn't find any threads really related to this problem. I may have overlooked though.

Hmmm.... That's pretty interesting. Are you running your tracks back with any plugins at all? The latency thing would be the first thing to check, but since you've already done that... Sheesh!

In Cubase, check (in the VST setup menu) your audio interface setup, and make sure that you don't have a box checked that says something to the effect of "32 bit for data stream" or something like that. (Sorry, I should find out exactly what/where it is, but my other PC is off at the moment...) I'm using a Tascam FW1804, and when I had that box checked, it did VERY
strange things, sometimes didn't even play any sound at all.

Also, assuming that you are running a Windows XP system, check out MusicXP.net. There are a lot of things on there that help you get your machine optimized for audio use, and it may help solving the problem more than my confused ramblings...

Good luck!

Thanks. Yeah this PC has already been pretty well optimized but I'll look through that site to see if there is anything it suggests that I havn't done. Thanks for the link.

I wasn't using a single vst or anything. I was going about as barebones as possible. My setup was this:

Mic'ed guitar amp > firepod pre-amp insert 1 > Cubase track 1 > get a level > hit record.

Looking at it on my statbar my cpu was running at around 3% and my RAM was at around 317 to 325/1024 which is about standard for an XP setup.

I'm gonna try again tomorrow and over the weekend. It might have just been a one time deal.

I had a problem with gaps in audio which drove me nuts (arr!) - it was resolved by moving all plugins from vst folder to another location, restarting cubase, quitting and moving them back. This forced a re-init of the plugs, and all was well. Worth a try?
