Something not quite right with the quality of recording, help would be appreciated

Hello all

Basically, I sent this song to be mixed to someone, and since Ive had this new setup (EMU 1820M, custom PC, Wharfedale 8.2, BLUE Bluebird, blueberry cables) he said something with the recording is preventing it from fitting in the mix, but not necessarily clipping...

If anyone could listen to this acapella and tell me what could be the problem, or if it is just a colorful mic, it would be appreciated. Here is the link to the acapella:http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...?bandID=566847

Any help would be very appreciated!

I've been toying with mics for 30+ years, and I dont hear anything at all that would make me say "it cant be mixed right"..... is it supposed to remain as an acapella piece? Or will music be added to it? Shouldn't matter.....

You're gonna have to press the guy to explain more specifically what he thinks is wrong with it.....if all he can tell you is "something with the recording is preventing it from fitting in the mix" and he cant explain it any more than that, then you got the wrong guy mixing your stuff...

Cuz you can get a hundred guys on this forum who know a lot more than me who will tell you there aint nuthin wrong with it at all....

Most engineers would be more than happy to get something this good to work with....

Just about the only thing I'd tell you to do is take a small step back off the mic. I'm hearing a lot of lip smacking and a little too much sibilance. Other than that it sounds just fine. If the guy can't mix it into a song then he's probably not what he claims he is.

theres a tiny bit of sibilance but that pops up in the most professional recordings. sounds great, id love to hear it with music. does he mean theres something wrong with the sample rate or something?

You should move this over to the clinic and you'd get more reviews.

I would try to brighten up the piano a little bit... maybe a bump between 4K and 6K, and drop out a couple db of the whole 300-500 range on the vox... then you should be in business. Of course, I just listened to it on laptop speakers, so you know....

None......dont automatically assume that eq should be used. Dont use it just because you have it. Like any "tool" you should only use it if something is "broke".

This acapella voc doesn't need eq....

i think it sounds nice (for a medium quality mp3, the highs are kinda garbled). sounds like possibly the sybillance was compensated for with an eq cut that takes a little bite out of the vox. at the end the piano gets a little "washy" too. other than that, nicely done!

This sounds really good. I would agree that the piano needs to be brightened up, and maybe have some reverb on it too so it doesn't sound like it's in a small room. This song sounds like it needs that more "epic" sound, so brighten up the piano a little and add some reverb (space) to it. Careful with the reverb though, it's easy to go overboard with it.

Its kind of funny, I use my dogs To help me mix. There are bad Freq. issues with the mix that make my dogs howl and bark. I am no way saying that this a terrible song or anything. The acapella seams to be well recorded. A little polishing needed though (on the engineer side). Whan listening to the whole mix my dogs went nuts which means to me that certian freqs. are out of control! I would have to strip the song apart to figure it out. Also try using a duel channel Tube PreAmp in between (if possible) the mix and the harddisk recorder to make up for bad A/D conversion and digital algorythem. That my help also. With a good engineer and good production this has potential to be a great song. Thats my $.02
