So...Darth Vader?
This is kind of a bizarre question. A friend wants me to try taking their voice and making it sound like Darth Vader. I have various wav files of him breathing, but I can't really get a good sound out of the voice. I haven't tried it on anything we want yet, just an old clip of him talking normally. There is a mask with a voice changer that actually works quite well, but the sound of his normal voice is also quite present.
Does anyone have some good suggestions. Dropping the pitch, some verb? |

Hire James Earl Jones.
![]() But seriously, that cheap-o toy voice changer is probably the best you'll get. James Earl Jones speaks very close to the voice naturally.

Yeah, knew I'd get that James Earl Jones one.
I read something on the net that mentioned the a flange effect and flange seems to work a bit better. I'm gonna try getting my hands on that mask and shoving a mic right up to it and see what happens, but for now I'm fiddling with this. |

D.Vader
Check out the set-up on a BR studio called the Vader patch...
To do it outboard you need the VT-1 (voice transformer by Boss), Noise supressor, Flanger and Delay Have fun! |

Well, it'll just be done 'in the box', but thanks.
Looking into it some more, ring modulation is another thing to use. I've never used one before but got a simple VST and it's okay I guess. |

I think you'll get pretty close with a ptch shifter and a flanger.

The boss BR532 has some funky voice changers.
Affirmative.

I think the breathing and the voice of darth vader were recorded separately. The breathing was recorded through some sort of scuba mask. The speaking was Jones through a vocoder (& probably some other effects). http://www.transmitmedia.com/svr/vault/burtt/

How about a Formant Shifter? You can create a good Lurch voice. Maybe something like that in conjuction with effects.

The most common suggestion I've come across is Jones and a flanger. A pitch shifter will be necessary, because my friend of course, isn't as deep.
I won't get a good chance to test these effects out until another week or two though. I'll let you guys know what I come up with. |

I used a vst modulator, added some reverb (ambience of course ) SLIGHT distortion/fuzz and created a small reverse reverb on it (probably wotn work for live apps though)Hopefully that helps. take a listen to what i did and see if thats the soudn you rlookign for. -Chris

I would say grab a clip of his voice (James) from like say, “ Coming to America” or some other movie with his voice and try to make it sound like Darth Vader. If you cant succeed there, then there’s no hope in making your friends voice sound like him. but I think that would be a good experiment.

Wow. That sounds a bit deep for Vader, but it sounds really close.
I'm hoping I can just overdub the voice, so doing the effects in realtime isn't a concern. What VST Modulator did you use? Where can I find it? And good suggestions, I'll try finding a clip of James w/o the Darth Vader stuff going on. I have a clip or two of Vader breathing, so I'll just mix that in with the voice later. |

i saw a darth vader voice transposer in walmart this past weekend and thought of this.
in keeping with the film...you have to enter the dark side (walmart) to get it. young skywalker had to go thru much worse though...so consider yourself lucky. Pax Mike
