Recording Help Needed

Hi I'm extremely new to recording music. I need help on what equipment I will need to purchase. Here's what I want to do. Download beats from the internet that generally come in mp3 and .wav format and have them playing to me in headphones while I put my vocals over them through a microphone. Editing those 2 things (beat and vocals) would also be nice too. Can anyone help me? Thank you so much for your time.
