Am I Using the Wrong MP3 Converter?????

I have done a couple of mp3 conversions using CDex and have had mixed results. First one sounded OK, considering source, (live from the '70s) The next one was a masterpiece of modern recording technology and artistry of the highest order. The conversion sounds like it was mixed thru a Fender champ reverb amp. Whatsupwidat???Is there a better converter out there that will give me better, more consistent results???Also must be , like, idiot-proof>! I have heard some mp3's that were near CD quality. How do they do that?????

What bitrate are you converting to? I use 192 for most of mine, as it sounds better than 128. Seems to keep cymbals from sounding washy. You can try Musicmatch for conversion, they have a free version of it for DL. Don't know if it's any better.

I've used CDEX before. It shouldn't really affect the sound, other than the lower quality you'll get from an MP3 as opposed to a WAV.

Use LAME with a good frontend like RazorLAME. Set to 192kbps or higher and everything should be fab.

I use CDex sometimes, using the LAME library, and covert it to a CBR (Constant bit rate) of 320kbps. You can use VBR to keep the file size down but I just leave it at 320 for best quality. Open CDex and check your settings...

Solution found!!!!Some idiot (?) got in and changed the rate . I reset it to
192 and things sound great...hold on....I think I should re-mix the thing. Funny how crap starts to show up when you listen in another context.
