Recording Virgin
Hello all,
I am a recording virgin, but I am really keen to set up a home recording studio. I want to start singing and recording over backing tracks. I have a PC, but thats about it, I need to find out exactly what I need i.e. sound card? mixer? mic? Also does anybody know where I can get good quality backing tracks(mainly big band music, sinatra etc.)? I would appreciate any advice, many thanks in advance, Rob |

well...this depends on how serious you want to get. a lot of people would agree that saving up to buy the good stuff is the way to go versus buying a bunch of low end stuff. If all you have is a pc, then im guessing you want to go digital. How much RAM do you have? Budget? I think the firebox is a good starting point. It seems to have very stable driver support and the sound quality is good for the money...it also comes with cubase, which i find to be a fairly user friendly recording software. As far as microphones...theres a really good faq in the microphone thread you should read, but everyone seems to like the AT 4040..ive never used it myself. Youll see people on here talking about preamps etc...a nice preamp is nice, but not necessary depending on deep into this youre looking in going. The Firebox has built in preamps, and like i said..i think they sound pretty decent. A good environment is very important...good acoustics, and of course..comfortable. The intangibles may not be the biggest thing to brag about, but patience and a will to learn are the most important things.

oh yea...the firebox works a soundcard, and cubase has a mixer built within it. your pc would require a port for firewire.

For backing tracks are you looking at a kereoke kind of thing with specific cover songs?
Take a look at http://www.pgmusic.com/store.htm I've not really used it, but the band in a box products sound like what you are describing . | Daav |
