need help with mixer to mr8

i have a yamaha mg8/2fx mixer and when i connected it to my fostex mr8, the sound was almost gone. Like it lost everything in the mixer to mr8 transfer process? i ran the yamaha "rec out" output to the mr8's 2 line inputs. Since the yamaha "rec out" uses an RCA typle connection and the mr8 line inputs are 1/4, i had to use adapters. Can anybody tell me how to run the mixer to the mr8 without losing any sound? i must've did something wrong. thanks

try this

I have a UB802 and run from the mains to the MR8. I think record out is line level.
Your Yamaha should have main outs. Run them to the inputs on the MR8.

If the Yamaha is a powered mixer DO NOT USE THE SPEAKER OUTPUTS!

The Line Outs/Ins on the MG (and UB, MX, VLZ, etc., etc., ) are usually at +4dB ("pro") levels, and RCA Tape/Rec Outs/Ins* are usually at -10dB ("consumer") levels. The main outs, aux sends, and insert sends should all work fine with the MR8 1/4-inch inputs.

*these are the connections that you usually want to use for cassette decks, home CD recorders, receivers, inexpensive sound cards, etc.---usually other units equipped with these jacks. The signal from these jacks is about 1/30 as "strong" as a Line Level (+4dB) signal.
