An MR-8 Challenge.. Please Contribute..!
i posed a question in the 'recording techniques' section about using my MR-8 as an end-source for recording my 'loud' rock-band with as much brightness and levelness as possible in order to emmulatte a live/raw-'soundstage' sound to it without any-overdubs and only (possibly) some mp3/wav mixing on my laptop afterwards..
please view this thread and comment accordingly. thanks - david dollar record View Thread: http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/sho...d.php?t=203669 MR-8 'Soundstage' Challenge

i guess the real question is.. (live-mastering)
what should the *level settings be for a 'left'/'right' live/soundstage capture be..?
one idea: Mic Line - 50%/Noon L/R Pre - 57.5% (slight-gain)(*from mixer) Master - 75% (red-line at peak) what does anyone think about these level-settings in order to capture a live/one-take recording session!?

I assume you mean Fostex MR-8 and not Tascam MR-8.
I think this is more of a gear question than levels question. Levels vary based on too many things. You want to avoid any chance of clipping. The MR8 is good device and can capture a wide range of sounds accurately. If it were me, I'd lose most of the outbound gear for recording. Mic drums, vocals, and instruments to mixer. Skip all the effects and send stereo send to MR8. You might add a mic or two a distance from the band to also capture the overall sound. What you're trying to capture is the live sound, not a processed sound. You may want to play with the EQ on channels to get the sound you want. Send result to a PC and mix there. You can add reverb at the PC, if needed or you might want to use that from the source. I'd try it both ways and pick the one that sounds best. Ed |
