96k error

hey guys, a friend of mine told me i should record at 96k to sound more "analog". i have read some of the views on this, and i am going to try it.

i have been getting an error message when i switch my firepod to 96k when i open cubase. it says, "samplerate could not be set due to external sync". i opened up the firepod driver and it says 24/96 and internal sync, so i dont see where the error is. also in the program 24/96, internal sync. i tried reading up on it by everything seemed to be normal.

i was wondering if i should ignore this message, and just record as is. Am i recording at 96k or not? another thing i hate about swithcing to 96k is that when i do, all the songs i recorded in 44.1 are all sped up. maybe i am doing something wrong?

thanx in andvance for any help. Flame

You might want to do a search around this forum, I think I recall seeing quite a few threads about this subject, maybe in the mixing/mastering forum (?)... From what I can remember, I think that the general concensus was that there was not that much audible difference, and all it did using a larger sample rate was eat up more hard drive space... But, like I said, try a search 'cause I've slept since I read those...

thanx

ya man , thanx alot. my question isnt exactly dealing with the difference between 96k or 44.1, but i want to try 96k. I am having an error in cubase itself and needed some specific help on cubase/firepod audio driver set up. thanks anyway though, and i will search.

There are an awful lot of views on this - But there no doubt that if you're going to record at high sample rates, 88.2 is going to be more than more than enough and will save you a little disk space and a little time when SRC'ing to 44.1.

But if you can't get 44.1 to sound absolutely stunning, the chances of that changing at higher sample rates are little to none.

thanks

Ya man i have some great recordings at 44.1. I went to a local music shop to buy a tube pre/di for bass guitars to warm some stuff up. He told me recording at 44.1 was not a good idea. i didnt really see anything wrong with it. i tried doing it before at 96k but always had this error. i was hoping someone would know or had experience with this error. i know there are tons of forums on views about whether or not its worth it to go 96k, which i have read, but i just want to try it to see if there is a difference myself. thanks for your help though.

If it helps, about every poll of full-time professionals that comes up (forums, professional institutions, etc.), show that around 75-80% of respondents are working *at the target rate*

With good conversion, most can't tell the difference. Many converter manufacturers claim that if you *can* hear the difference (between 44.1 and 88.2 or 96) in their own converters, something must be broken.

maybe cubase should say external sync, it sounds like maybe youre setting cubase as the sync (internal).. set cubase to external sync and hopefully that will work..

gl

-the main difference i notice between 44.1 and 96 is that i cant even back up my session to a double layer dvd at 96 (even compressed!!!!)

I agree, it has to be a Cubase setup issue. You have to make sure that you open your new session at 96k and that the firepod is set to 96k.

The moron at the store doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. If he is the one trying to sell you something with tubes in it to 'warm up your sound' (and the tube device in question costs less than $1000) he is a sales-weazel and should not be trusted. He knows nothing and is mearly parroting myths, wives tails, and sales BS in an effort to gain your trust. (and your wallet)

Hey not sure if this would work for you. I have SX3 with m-audio 1418.

The my system works is that, I have to leave my audio driver at 44/16 and open cubase... set the project properties to 96/24. Once I do that, cubase changes my audio driver setting and everything works.

Have you tried this?
