"try as WDM"....Float......24 bit? Functions within CEP2.1 detail??

Hi all,
are there any benefits to using this particular function within CEP2.1.....
"Try as WDM".........located in the settings section, reffering to each sound card u may have installed.
I've Also just installed a Delta44 (soon to be 2), would I have this function checked or not for this card.

While I'm on the subject.....there is a section which describes the 'abilities' of your installed cards. ie 8 bit...then frequency and 16 bit then frequency etc etc.....I would have thought that this may also show 24 or 32 bit fuctions possible, and not just say 'extensible' or 'yes', within this same column.
Also,
Is my Delta still giving me true 24 bit support (I record in what CEP2.1 calls 32bit/48K)???
When I run a 16 bit file thru 'analyser' it says 16 bit.....that's fine.
When I run a signal recorded in 32bit, it wil say 'float'.
Will it ever say 24bit?? (I think I understand the internal 'mixing' process involved being 32 bit)
I also set my cards to '4 byte pcm' (under-'send 32 bit data as'....). Am I allowing the best quality recording (in a practical sense) I can with these settings.??
Is there anything more I can do to assist the recording/playback quality?
Don't get me wrong....I love the quality now, just, can I do better by way of settings?)
PS: No Asio...No 24 bit???? (Can you set me straight with this??).
I've used this prog for years now....and often find myself wondering about these particular functions, in a practical sense. Everything else seems fine!

I thank you,
Superspit.

Yes. The soundcard does 24-bit. CE/AA does 24-bit when it's tracking, but when it's mixing, it does 32-bit floating point for all the math that's required. The extra 8 bits are there for 'calculation space', but it all resolves to 24-bit.

If you need a version of a CE/AA track in solid 24-bit cuz you're going to export it to another program, for example, you can do a Save As and convert it to something which not only is, but *is called* 24-bit.

Thanx man! Appreciate the good explanation on the 32 bit math, makes sense.
Got any info on WDM in relation to CEP 2.1's "try as WDM"??
Again....Thanx!!

WDM refers to the driver generation in Windows

I couldn't get mine to work with "Try as WDM" checked with XP (this was before I upgraded to AA 2.0, which uses ASIO). In fact, When I unticked "Try as WDM" I could only get a stereo pair of inputs...until I finally discovered that I had to select each pair (of 4 pair, or 8 inputs) and untick "Try as WDM." I ended up using the old MM drivers, but the soundcard handled 8 simultaneous I/O until, as I said, I got 2.0. Now I can run 16 I/O, and probably more if I had more inputs.

Funny....last nite I got my 2 Delta 44's fired up! I can record 8 seperate and simul channels with no problems....I can only seem to play them back as stereo pairs!! ie 4 tracks (Via CEP2.1). I am currrently running with all devices ticked "try as WDM" on record and playback devices.
I was hoping I wouldn't have to use M-Audio's mixer program to get my 8 channels back out seperatly!! ie: 8 seperate ins and 8 seperate outs?
surely I can do this?...any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

MAN! I CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST ASKED ABOUT THE STEREO PAIRS OUT!! FOUR STEREO OUTS = 8 MONO OUTS !!THEREFORE I'VE GOT WHAT I WANT ALREADY!! MAN! sorry!! Still......WDM thing still is interesting!

These are a couple of tracks that I recorded in my room. (they are of lower quality, streaming type audio...but should give you an idea.) these are early demo's I put on a 'site'......
The guitars, bass and recording/production work are from me.....the music is not original though! Let me know what you think.....I don't mind getting bashed, infact I'll give u a number and u can get to the back of the line!!
