It is a condenser microphone which uses a "Field Effect Transistor" as it's head amplifier instead of a vacuum tube.

How do they perform as opposed to vacuum tubes? Are they better? Worse? Different? Are FET mics generally pricey?

That depends on who you ask.

FETs generally have lower self noise and are more transparent. They are definately different. Tubes impart an amount of even order harmonics and light distortion which can make them sound bigger and are usually smoother sounding.

As with both types, it has to be a well designed circuit with quality components. Tube mics a often more expensive. The things that influence price are if the mic is coveted in a "vintage" way, or if it's just got a great reputation and sound.

Ok let me explain, the reason I ask is because I was thinking about buying a large order of mics directly from a Chinese company, and I planned to sell them for profit. So really I'm asking, where would the real money lie, in FET's, Tubes, or Ribbons?

Before you get into the microphone business, you might want to actually know something about microphones. Just a thought.

Hey, what an original idea. Import mics from China, stamp your logo on them and sell them in the West. Make sure you go on at length about tailored response curves and how the mics have been calibrated using the highest quality equipment and manufactured according to strict European standards.

If you want a real money maker, don't worry about whether its transistor, tube or ribbon, just stamp the word 'RAP' on it and you will have yourself a huge customer base.

Out of interest, which factory are you ordering from?

Well, I could tell you, but seeing as you find it more appealing to mock people than to help them, I think I will keep that to myself.

One thing I've learnt on this forum is to keep your motives to yourself.

You've got to admit, you don't need my or anyone else's efforts to mock you, you've managed to make a joke of yourself. You are expecting to release Diffusion brand microphones by first advertising that you don't know what an FET condenser is???? C'mon, you expect someone to by a 'Diffusion DSMC1100' knowing full well that you have no idea what to do if something is wrong with it. People buy rebranded Chinese mics rather than the originals because the intermediary company offers customer service and support.

I just asked about the company to see if it was a new manufacturer or if it's one of the 'usual suspects'. If it's 797 Audio, Studio Projects, Behringer and Rode have beaten you to it. If it's Alctron, Nady, SM Pro Audio and Rode are already there. I think ADK is from Felio but modified and I think Felio have made for MXL, Behringer and Nady. MXL and seElectronics have their own factories now. There is also SoundKing, but I don't know who they make for.

The group buy on this forum did the same thing from Alctron, except I don't think the organiser made a profit.
