Saxophone SDC vs. LDC

Anyone here prefer using a small condenser for saxophone rather than a large condenser?

(BTW- this is my OFFICIAL 400th post!!! )

I prefer to mix either an SDC and LDC or LDC+Ribbon.

Ahhh!!! Very good question! I asked the client the same thing and he shrugged his shoulders. I think the tune has like an old R&B vibe to it, but the client is still working out his "vision".

He called in a sax player for tonight, but gave me no more details. I guess we'll just have to wait 'til tonight to find out.

I'm planning on throwing a few LDCs on mic stands just to be ready for anything. Just figured I'd get some second opinions.

i'd take an RE20 and stick it down the bell of the sax and be done with it.

otherwise, i'm with big ray--combine an SDC and LDC (or ribbon and LDC) and mic more from a distance.

but seriously--don't underestimate a dynamic in recording sax.

cheers,
wade

LOL! that would've been interesting esp. if it was a Bari!

Just to give you guys an update:

The sax player was great to work with! We decided on a tenor and miked it with a Peluso CEMC6 about 8'' out from the center of the sax and a Beta 57 between 6-10" facing down the bell.

Very satisfied with what we've got to work with at mixdown.

Cheers, Rez
