what guitar is for me?

hello,

i've been playing guitar (acoustic) for about 2 years now and i feel that i want to move on to an electric one. ive been playing a taylor big baby, but i am kind of frustrated that i can't create the sounds i want with an acoustic.

i want to play more alternative rock, somewhat progressive and i want to be able to experiment. so far, ive asked people i know and they say to get a tele + new pickup.

any suggestions? keep in mind ive never owned an elec guitar before so im kind of a newbie

You didn't indicate your budget, but if I were you I'd look at getting a hollowbody, or semi-hollowbody.

The tone is more flexible and the feel will be consistant(somewhat) with what you're used to.

I field this question all the time, and while the flip answer is always the same (that $5,000 one on the wall!!!), the real answer is I have no clue. Niether, by the way, does anyone else. Except of course, you. And even you don't know, yet. However, YOU have a unique qualification that none of the rest of us have.

What you need to do is go to a good guitar store and try EVERYTHING. Don't limit yourself to guitars other people have recomended, nor to guitars which are in your price range. The only way you will ever get the real answer is to try everything you can get your hands on, and then figure out which one comes closest to what you hear in your head without going TOO far out of your price range. It is, I think, important to play guitars which are outragously outside you price range, by the way, just to give you a frame of reference. It may be that your exact guitar is that $5,000 one on the wall, but that you can't afford it. At least that way, you will know what you are after when looking at ones you can afford. (Plus, of course, as a builder, I want to ignite G.A.S. in every player on the planet).

Oh yeah, and the best part of this process is, you get to spend your Saturday afternoons in guitar stores! I don't know about you, but aside from a blow job from Christy Turlington, I can't think of too many better ways to spend an afternoon. (And I spend almost every afternoon in a guitar store.)

Try everything, and find the one which speaks in YOUR voice.

Everything else is crap.

Keep in mind, there is quite a bit of difference in the way you play electric as opposed to acoustic. While the notes and chords are the same there is a definate difference to the picking style. The transition from acoustic to electric may be easier if you go to a hollow body (ES335 style) because of the larger body (more like an acoustic feel to it) rather than a solid body. Of course you may feel right at home on a strat or other style od electric body. As others have said, go to a store where you can play a variety and check them out, some will feel totally out of sorts, when you play the right one you will know it, it will just feel right to you. Find the right feel first, then you can look for the combination of guitar/amp to get the sound you want.

Dude, go to as many guitar stores as you can, try out as many guitars as you can annoying the sales people if you have too, and you're fingers will tell you what feels best and your ears will tell you which one sounds best.

Hate to be useless, but decide YOURSELF! its only you who can choose your own guitar.

I like the advice to look for a hollow body to ease the transition. I'd also recommend getting it setup with at least 10's. When I switched back to electric after about 10 years of playing acoustic only, I found that anything lighter than that would go out of tune when I played it just from fretting. I typically use 12's with wound G on all my electric guitars.
