Does the FD8 have Mic pre-amp and if so are any good ?

Would it be better to use a good mixer and go from there to the FD8 ?

Thanks for any help.

Personally I prefer Mic Pre Amps over mixer mic pre amps.
Some of the Mackie Boards pre amps are good.

Cool

Yeah the onboard fd-8 pres aren't too hot. My presonus blue-tube is much nicer. I don't know if you need a whole nuther mixer though.

I was thinking of doing away with the FD8 at some time in the future anyway
Jett Rocker, I've just bought a RME Digi96/8 Pad Sound card and I want to
go from a Mixer to PC eventually.
I'm hearing a lot of good things about Mackie to, so I will properly start looking
there.

I'll tell you what,
I battled this same issue a few months ago. I felt the preamp on the fd8 was pretty piss poor. So, I did my homework and found out that those on multitrackers in general are of poorer quality. If you are looking for a decent preamp and something that is reasonably priced, I would suggest you try behringer before you go with mackie. They are essentially the same units and I believe mackie had recently issued a law suit against behringer for patent law infringement. I bought a 8 channel behringer euro series which has served me very well. If you would like to hear a sample, I have a few songs with all instruments recorded throught the behringer and into the FD8. Check out http://www.mp3.com/steelpetals and listen to either "black diamond" or "Song for a Flower".
Hope this helps.
