Hidden......WIP......

This is a tune I am starting to mix. It has Bulls Hit on drums, and lbanks on bass. I keep thinking it's sounding good, then after a few listens, feel it needs more. So, Let me know how it's shaping up on your systems. I have some lead to put into it, but had to park that for this evening, and there are a few glitches in my guitars that need fixing, but I was having some timing trouble, so that will happen later.

Hidden

Thanks for any input. I just want to make sure the individual parts are being heard well.

Dogman
The cymbal at the beginning needs some definition. On my stereo speakers it sounds like bottle tops rattling.
Apart from that it is pretty full on.
It does need the dynamic lift of a solo or two & probably a second vocal line - not harmony as such just a slight counter melody of a backing vocal here and there to compare & contrast with the lead vocal.
I was wondering where the bottom end was until the bass & drums came in in heir own time - Perhaps a bigger clue or forshadowing is needed - the beginning guitar sound is really full which is why I figured the bass & drums were buried in it. Maybe lift some of the bottom out at 1st.
I'd love to have the chance to play this at full vol. to get the thud in the chest that it obviously carries.
Well done ibanks, Bulls Hit & Dogman. Collaboration is much more enjoyable isn't it.

Yo Dogman!! This is some cool shit!! Love the bass and those drums kick!!

Your vocals are just...so...Dog!! Love them!! This needs to go into the weed whacker thread....I am scared!!

In the opening vocals, if you could clarify just a tad...no more..cause that nightmare aura is so cool. They are just a bit muddy in areas.

I love this Dog!! Is that the floor tom, bulls hit is making such good use of?

Dog....rock my nightmares boogyman!!

Ibanks....you rock bassman!!

Bulls hit...rawk on wild man!!

Cool tune. Interested in hearing the final outcome of this!

Keep in mind I'm listening through crappy headphones, but I can't hear the bass very well and the vocals sound too loud. Also, look out for possible conflicts with the lower mids of the vocals and the guitars and bass when mixing, as things might get a little muddy.

The kick needs to come up a bit too.

How do I miss these threads?

I liked this the first time I heard this. It's even better now. Love those drums. Cool vocals, as usual Dog. Guitars are huge.

Hey Dogman,

This is a very cool piece. The performance by all is very cool. Very cool.

The cymbals in the beginning, could maybe use a little more EQ in the 1.5kHz+ range.

I hear two noticeable guitars once the song starts. Those two kind of step on each other in places in the EQ space. So maybe something you can do there. They conflict with each other in what is played at all. Just the EQ.

The bass is just too cool (how it's played) and nicely mixed with the heavy main rhythm and how it emphasizes the rhythm melody instead of just being boom boom.

At 0:16 the flange seems a little too harsh for a second. But then it's ok.

Is the vox flanged too? Sounds pretty cool.

The drums are also nicely played. The cymbal build ups in places behind the rhythm are cool.

Nice ending with the bass.

I remember this. I never heard it with vox, its very dark and very cool. Has a Rob Zombie Vibe going on.

The only thing I would change is the solo Cymbal parts. It reminds me of a click track. I would suggest a tuned triangle a la YYZ by Rush I bet that would sound killa that way.

Very cool stuff. I like the darker side of this style of music, well done.

Thanks all. Just what I'm looking for. I tried to get the drums and bass out some, but then buried them with the vox. I can hear them on my system, but I have to listen closely. I thought this might have been from playing the tune so much, but sounds like it needs more definition. I also think I pushed it too hard to get it loud, and that convoluted the mix some.

rayc, maybe some verb on the cymbal at the start? Is that what you were thinking? I've had it done about 4 different ways, and can't seem to make up my mind....

True, thanks girl.....I need to work on the vox some, but I keep killing the bass and some drums, and need to fix that aspect. I will probably redo the intro vox, and see if I can do better. That was only my 3rd try at them. My voice keeps fading....

Cy, thanks man....I think you got it right....I had the vox lower, and couldn't make them out, and boosted too much. I also had the kick real punchy, but thought it might be too much. I'll try to put it back, and see how it sounds again. Thanks again man....

Rami, you didn't miss it, I just barely posted it....
Thanks man....the individual parts sound really good, so I should be able to get a good mis from this. Just takes some time.....I finish so few things I start, that I don't have the skills I need. Thanks again man....

Bubba, thanks man....there is no eq on the begining cymbals, so they are pretty dry, except a small amount of verb. I'll see about brightening them up some. I had them too overbearing at first, and may have just hidden them too much. What about teh 2 guitars? Are you talking maybe eq one to be a bit lower, and teh other to fill a bit more of the highs? I did make them really close to the same, and that is probably a mistake. There is also a glitch in timing, and I will probably have to retrack the whole thing to fix it, as my punch ins sound terrible. And I did flange the second intro guitar some, to seperrate it from the first one. Vox are just one track, with some verb, and a chorus on them. They are supposed to be sort of industrial sounding, but that didn't work very well. Thank sagain man.

And thanks all....this gives me some ideas to work on. I appreciate it. It should keep me busy for a few days....

Thanks David....the intro cymbal started out as a click, sort of. It's a stolen idea from Godflesh. I usually just crash right in on most tunes, but wanted something that built up a bit more slowly. The triangle, or something different might sound pretty cool. I hadn't thought of that. Something that gets more rhythmic, but is still simple...that might work well.
Thanks again man. appreciate it.

Sweet,, finally get to hear this one with full band, sounds cool.

Great rythm section on this one, fits the song perfectly, great work Ibanks and Bull.

As I`ve told before Dogman, this riff kills.

You`ve really formed this tune nicely, its nice following it from scratch.

Nice work buddy.

Your Vox is really WWE on this one

thankss for sharing

Hey Dogman,

I have listened to this a few times now and the guitars are sounding pretty darn good to me through my system. The only point that I can constructively criticize and you are going to hate me for bringing this up again is that the riffing and the drum fill/roll at approx 1:50 doesn't mesh together.

You must be thinking ...Damn you Gorty..Who asked you anyway!!!

I have been following this since it's incarnation and you guys are doing great!

If you do need some lead at all Dogman, I know someone with a nice new shiny Les Paul that would probably want to play!!!

The guitars are sounding pretty PHAT Dogman!

Naka, thanks for the listening and props, much appreciated, buddy. I am going to try and finish this soon...

And gort, no problem. The rhythm parts are what I'm talking about that I need to finish. I just keep having trouble doing a punch in at teh spot about 1:50, so am probably just gonna have to retrack the guitars...

If you want, go ahead and play some lead to this. Larry played some, and I'm in the process of editing it now, and there might be some space for more when I'm done. He did some stuff that is sort of Blues/Jazz, and something different might make a great counterpart to add in. I'll try and get some of his lead put in a version, and post it for you to see what it's like, and then you can head in the direction you want. Thanks again, and no worries on the criticizing the guitar....I need to not be lazy and fix the damn thing....

Thanks again guys...much appreciated.

Listening at work on pretty lackluster speakers so no real mix advice. Really like how this one turned out / is turning out. Vocals sound real cool, real dark. Drums sound great bulls, real powerful. From what I can hear of the bass it sounds real tight. I like the change up at 2:39. Also real cool at 2:57 with the drum fills. Can't wait to hear it with the leads and finished up. Wish I could offer some mix advice but these speakers make everything sound pretty washed out. Seems a bit compressed, but I'd really have to hear from home to have any idea. Loved it man.

Take care

Thanks Gary. The bass on it's own is really quite cool. it got tamed a bit putting it in the tune, but that works well. I need to re-adjust the levels, but will probably stick the lead in now, and see what happens.

Thanks again man.

Yes I remember this from the signature guitar riff - copyright that right away....

Listening on headphones.....

The intro vocals are very spacey. True mentioned they could use some more definition. I agree when compared to the following verses. It could be a genre specific effect that calls for that so I'm not sure what to recommend - I'll pass that back to you for comments. It does seem to need some de-essing though.

Guitars (bass and rhythm) are really nicely done - fat and full...

Drums sound really good in this mix. Makes me want to buy a better drum machine/software program .

Cool tune - keep us posted on the up coming remix(es).

Thanks ido...not sure what I want to do wiht the opening cox.....they were an after thought, and the few ways I've tried them, well, they just seem to be there. I might really compress them, and back them off some...see if that gives them more depth. Who knows...but thanks man. I really appreciate it.

Yo dawgmaster, what up?
My speakers sound like more static than music right now, so I'm listening on cheap headphones Anyway, even on the headphones this sounds real powerful. Love the guitar crunch Perfect vox for this song too.
I could hear that 2:40 part really bringing down the house. I look forward to hearing the lead in this. It almost sounds like some Rob Zombie synths and/or would fit this thing too.
Cool

Thanks Snake. I need to start getting the lead in there correctly, and Gorty is gonna do some also. Plus, I need to fix a few glitches with my playing. Imagine that.... Then, I need to start on The Box.....it's just been sitting idle for a while. I need to finish these things....

Thanks for the listen man.....

Nice rockin' there bud!

It does get a little muddy at times with the kick and bass/Low guitr, very noticable when he lays into the double bass.

Keep on groovin'. I like the ending too with the fade of the guitars, to the drums, to the bass.

Hey, thanks man...I'm working on a new mix as we speak.....I think I got rid of some of the mud, and fixed my guitar part now.....I had way too much lowend in the guitars. Drums seem a bit cleaner, and teh bass is heard a bit more now.

Thanks man....
