Have u got a RED ROVER as your transport? Can I buy it then?

Hi,
Does anyone know where I can get one of these......
http://namm.harmony-central.com/WNAMM02/Content/Syntrillium/PR/Red-Rover.html
It's called a 'Red Rover' and is designed to take over from many of the software transport/function controls in CEP 2.0/2.1. I imagine that it would be nice to replace the software transport system with something anyone could drive.(even say, a bass player!!)
Apparently, they are no longer made....so would you people (users of RR) give yours up..(sell)!!??
Maybe can also give me some 'practical' advice on what u think of the unit?
Regards,
Superspit.
ps..I play bass too!!

Do a google search: you should turn up Red Rovers for sale. They are still being produced, as far as I know, but of course Syntrillium is no longer in business.

I had a Red R for a while and it worked pretty good. I now use a Mackie Control, which is lightyears beyond the RR.

Thanx IP,....did a google search world wide.....only found one in the USA.
I'm currently bidding.....but don't like my chances!
They say (Syntrillium, of old) that the RR can be used with many other Recording Software types....Same must be with your Mackie?? It's obviously working for you. Would it be worthwhile considering something like yours, if it has the same 'plug and play' system as RR, and can be used in CEP2.1?
Note:RR has definetly stopped in production.
Could I also grab off you the model number of your Mackie,....anyone please jump in and let us know what u use!!?
Thanx,
SuperSpit

The big difference is price: the Mackie Control Universal goes for $1K US. The other big difference is functionality: the Mackie emulates a hardware mixer for a lot of tasks. It is also built like a tank, and is about the size of 2 keyboards.

I have mine sitting on a computer desk in front of the monitor, with the keyboard and mouse on the pullout shelf underneath. My mixers are in racks on each side.

Cool Edit Pro 2.1 will work with the Mackie, but not 2.0, which will work only with the Red Rover. Not all Mackie functions are available in 2.1, or in Adobe Audition 2.0 (what I am currently using) for that matter.

I started with the Red Rover, which was great for simple jobs like arming tracks and starting or stopping recording or playback, but when I moved up to a Tascam US-428 I gained a lot more: 8 faders, EQ, and audio routing facility (somewhat limited, of course). When the Tascam fried I decided to go for the big guy and got the Mackie.

Note that you must have firmware v.2.1.2 for the Mackie to work with CEP or Audition. Mine came with 2.0.2 and made me crazy trying to figure out what was wrong. The newer firmware is downloadable from Mackie.com, and is in the form of a MIDI file. You press a couple of buttons on the Mackie to put it in upgrade mode (the manual tells you how), play back the MIDI file, and bingo: your Mackie is upgraded. One problem I had was that CEP/AA does not play MIDI files, but I finally hit upon playing it in Windows Media Player, and it worked.

Another possibility is the EZBus controller. I don't know if they are still being made, but my playing partner has one and it works with CEP 2.1.

wow IPD!!! Thankyou for your response, very nice. I guess I love the idea of the RR because it only has the functions that I really need...mainly being remote arming/recording. I hate to have to put my guitar/spoons down to get up to walk to the 'puter. I do have a radio control mouse and Kboard.....they help a little and only when I'm in range (LOL).....but the RR concept has really caught me.
Thanks so much again!!

Hey IP!
tell me something about the practical use of what I just purchased and are awaiting.
Did you find it worked with little delay, as fast as a mouse and keyboard does?
Did you have to use software with it? (Did it come with any?)Mine apparantly has no S/w supplied, but I suspect that it doesn't need it? (Hardware driven?)
Mate, any info you have time to tell me would be ace!

Cool, When those first came out I really wanted one.

However, It should be noted that you can use any common MIDI keyboard / footswitch to do any transport function in CEP/Audition. Or any other function from Punch-in/out, to cut/paste, to specific effect application, and many, many more things..

What's involved in a MIDI keyboard as a controller? You program a particular key for a particular function?

What's a small MIDI keyboard cost?

Gee, so many questions. You'd think this place was a wikipedia...

Yeah...I know where TT2 is coming from, using any Keyboard to drive certain functions. Been there....no comparison in a 'practical' sense. Red rover has a long, thin maneuverable cord and it looks like the good old 'tape transports' from yesteryear!! Try remotely driving CEP from 10 feet away with a guitar in your hands...and a midi keyboard!!! It's hard!! Anyways....horses for courses!!
By the way.....any cheapo midi keybard, like TT2 said, can be setup to trigger stuff..hope that helps a little. Thanx for feedback peoples!! Rock-On.
