Question

I was using my old mac for midi and it was so simple, just plug in the serial connector and your going. I bought a midi
connector for my PC and hooked it up and tried recording midi into Cubase and got nowhere quick. Can anyone help me, I am new at this and pretty stupid to boot?

dragonworks,

We need more detail about the problem. What, specifically, is not happening. What keyboard, what MIDI controller, version of Cubase, etc... Offhand, it sounds like something is not setup right in Cubase, maybe the drivers, etc... or that the Multimedia settings on the PC or on the keyboard. More detail would help with the problem.

I had a QS 6.1, and had MIDI communication issues when I first got it. I solved it by making sure that the MIDI setting was changed from "local" to Out 01 (or one of the 16 channels). However, without more detail, your problem could be anything. Give more specific info. Even between all of the frustration.

Alesis QS8, I have the global setting set to out 01 and to
PC, I set them the same for the mac except it was set for
mac not PC. Cubase is VST24 and I dont know how to set that up. Nothing is happening. I thought the QS8 was the midi
controller. I bought the midi cable, one goes to keyboard
midi in, the other to midi out and the other end to joystick
in on the computer.

"I have the global setting set to out 01 and to PC"

I don't want to insult your intelligence, but double-check a few things:

1. Check the back of the QS8 and make sure that the communication setting has been changed to "MIDI" rather than "MAC" or "PC1/PC2". It sounds like you have it set to "PC"

2. Make sure that the "MIDI IN" of the MIDI cable goes to the "MIDI OUT" of the keyboard (and the "MIDI OUT" of the MIDI cable goes to the "MIDI IN" of the keyboard)

3. Make sure that when you play the QS8 in Cubase that you have selected the same MIDI channel that the keyboard is playing. That is: if you are using a 16 channel setup, make sure that all 16 channels of the combination are "on". Go through each of the 16 channels and enable them.

If you are using just one instrument then make sure that the QS is set to send MIDI info on the channel that you are recording to. Change the MIDI channel with the "bank" buttons and watch the QS' screen to see which channel it's on.

As far as setting Cubase up, I'm not sure. I use Emagic Logic Audio. Most digital audio sequencers come already "setup", so my guess is that the problem is in your keyboard setup.

First I have to be intelligent to have my intelligence insulted and there is some debate there. I think you may
be right about the swith in the back being set to PC, let
me go through everything again and I will check back, it is
5:30 am an I am getting ready for work so I will do all this
at a later date. Thanx
