M-Audio BX8a's....your opinions

What are your thoughts on this monitor..? Do you think the KRK RP6's or Yorkville YSM2P's are better than this? I know that the BX8's has the most power than the rest of the monitors mentioned, but are they flat and accurate?

I have the old ones, not the a's. Pretty bassy, but "learnable." I have mine in the middle of my room, with my back against a wall, and I still use the "Acoustic Space" on -4dB. I tend to get my mixes right on the first or second try nowadays, so I guess they are working for me.

I auditioned many monitors in this price range, and they are at the top of my list. I'll be picking up a pair very soon. Most other monitors were either hyped in the low/high, and others were hyped in the mids. The BX8a's seemed to be well balanced to my ear.

Thanks for the response. Do you think the BX8a's are better than the KRK RP6's or Yorkville YSM1P?

I wouldn't call myself a producer (or produca), but I track and mix rock bands, mostly shades of indy, but also a bit of heavy stuff.

So, do u think the BX8a's will pay off good for singing and rap vocals and overall instrument mixes?

Probably. Bring some CD's to a Guitar Center on off hours (like mid day, mid-week) and listen for a couple hours. Like I mentioned, they have very strong bass, and they go quite low, so they may work well for rap.

Disclaimer: I bought my BX8's 25% on reviews, 75% because they were on sale for like $250 or something.

Edit: It appears from your equipment list that you have bought 'em. Just spend a couple hours a day listening to music you consider well-produced on the mionitors, until you get used to them. They'll do well enough.

I swear by these monitors. I'll be keeping the pair I have until they die.

i have just the bx8's, - not the a's...mix a lot of rap, and a lot of hardcore.

anyway, i think they are pretty nice monitors, fairly accurate. I DO have problems with the bass sometimes, but I credit that to the room, not the monitors. I had problems with old monitors as well, it's a horrible room.

anyway, i'd reccommend them. perhaps EBAY could get you a lot cheaper for the older version though.

One thing which I know about the BX8a's is that M-Audio designed these monitors so that when they are set at "unity gain" they are actually at +12 dB. So when people go into a store and listen to them and compare them to other monitors whatever they're listening to just sounds louder (which in many people's minds = better!).
I have a pair, adn I really love them. But ear fatigue can sort of creep up on you (possibly due to what I just mentioned). If you know the room that you mix in, then it won'tbe hardto learn these monitors quicly and lay down some nice stuff.

I have the BX8s. I prefer them to the KRKs or NS10s in my studio. They are indeed a little bass heavy but as with any monitor, you learn to use what you have. Every monitor has it's own set of characteristics. You just have to practice enough to be able to understand them and translate them into a mix that works.
