Moog Little Phatty VS Korg MS-20

I'm fixing to finally drop some descent cash on an analog synth. I'm weighing the old school and new school options - mainly between the Moog Little Phatty or a Korg MS-20. I need some opinions.

I'm looking in the $1000-$1500 price range. I don't need more than a couple octaves.

I'm leaning towards the Moog... the programmable patches are really attractive. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Jacob

I hate these kind of 'polls' with only two options.

This is a post, not a poll IMHO.

I voted for 'other' because with my kustom patches my Korg MS2000R can blow away either one of those - and @ $250/each I can get 4 or 6 of them for the money you're going to spend on just one little 'board.

So there.

Ditto to what ssscientist says (yo, whaz up ssscientist, long time no talk....).

Except in my case I'm a fan of the Alesis Ion for my analog needs. Now I'm by no means, anti-analog, in fact I used to be an analog purist, but after decades of fighting with analog equipment, I am starting to appreciate the value of the VA's (Not to mention the far greater flexibility). In fact my analog units no longer leave the studio, and with the addition of my Ion, I was able to streamline my live performance enormously.

If I was in a must pick situation though for the 2 you have listed, I'd go with the Moog, because it is a lot newer and will be less prone to failures for a great deal of time. That said, if you wish to deal with all the headaches of analog, and don't need memory and all those other modern conveniences, the MS-20 sonically is an absolute power-house, capable of soaring leads, really nice warm pads, and basses that will move most buildings off there foundations if played loud enough.

do yourself a favor, take a look at the nord lead. Its got real rich analog simulation, + way more flexible than the moog. The moog is a nice piece however, I have checked it out at the moog factory, Its about as good as you are going to get for the money, but it is very limited. The korg is nice as well. That is unless you need to access the filters for other instruments. I would save up and get a Voyager

You should really check out Dave Smith's Evolver series http://www.davesmithinstruments.com/ (Tons of audio samples at this site)

If anyone knows how to take "old school", and bring it into the new millenium, Dave Smith is the one.

The new Evolver (Mono) Keyboard can be had for just $1,200 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MEK/

it depends on what type of music you play.. if it's rock, i wouldn't recommend the nord lead; i just sold mine since it just didn't get "dirty" enough for my liking. moog all the way, although you can't go wrong with the ms20... it's a great synth too.
