hearing your mixes through a PA
I've just heard 3 of my latest mixes through my PA system & have to say that I'm blown away
People around the globe (me included) reference on different systems big, small, good & bad. In my opinion the final test comes when it's cranked up through a PA & the top end doesn't cut your head off & the low end doesn't remove the foundations It sounded to me like a well mic'd & well mixed band HELL YEAH I'm as chuffed as my avatar

I am glad it sounded good through the PA. That is a hard test to pass. However, in the end, it is not the greatest one. PA's often sound radically different with different types of source material. I gave up testing my mixes through the PA a long time ago. Now I am just happy if they sound OK there and do not take much processing to fit in

I got pretty stoked after hearing a few songs I had mixed over the PA at a local club. They sounded great.

I once did a show where EVERYTHING was Behringer, but the soundguy was awesome and made it sound really good. |

There are definately some great sounding PA's out there. I agree that a great engineer can coax some pretty good stuff out of some pretty poor gear (assuming that the source he has been given is good as well. I have also heard full blown million dollar V-Dosc rigs sound bad. Of course the reason in the one sepcific event is obvious... When the owner of the company shows up at the console and starts making his own console and channel strip changes WHILE the headliners engineer is trying to adjust the main graph and system processing, it is rarely a good sign. Luckily he was only able to make those unwarranted, uninvited, and improper adjustments with one hand because he was too drunk to set down the bottle of whiskey in his other hand.
In general however, PA's do not have the "greatest" of sound due to lack of money (a good PA is VERY expensive), and there is a severe shortage of really good FOH engineers. Especially if you are dealing with an "installed" house.
