Tell me about this ATR 60
I got one of these from a university radio station that was using it as a doorstop. I rescued it a couple years back but just recently got around to setting her up. Can anybody tell me a bit about the unit? It seems like a tank to me and when I ran tone through it I got pretty even signal pretty close to 0dB. How do you calibrate/bias it? I opened it up and found nothing resembling audio cards. Give a dog a bone!
Also, in the same month of gear rescuing I happened upon a Sont APR 5003 (half track with time code channel), does anybody know anything abouut this guy? I might get rid of one of these machines so I want to figure out which one might be the keeper. |

the ATR- line was Tascam's topline analog recorder, just prior to them throwing in the analog towel.
The ATR-60-2's record/play amps and transport are two completely separate units. (I'm sure u knew that!) As far as bias/setup of the unit,... if you're getting 0/0 response on rec/play, then I'd not mess with it! You don't mess with success! ![]()

I like this quote: "a client who was an avid collector, aficionado and occasional professional in the electronics field. If he liked something it was not uncommon for him to purchase multiple units."
That sounds like me! ![]()

Now I remember this guy selling sticky tape before, and I got a kick out of the following line in the auction:
Quote:
![]() By the way, for those that don't know, you can tell if an Ampex reel is from the sticky years by where the label is on the box. High up near the middle is from around 1985 (86?) to 1993... sticky city! Some might want this old formula tape as a collector of Ampex memorabilia just to have it, but not try to use it. In that case I suppose it’s as legitimate an auction as any… just don’t try to record with it. ![]() Ampex tape from late 1994 and newer has the label along the bottom edge and is just as good as new Quantegy... some say even better, but that's another thread. ![]()

Seems the fellow relisted and updated the listing (for the ATR-60) ... well sort of ..
ebay NOS ATR-60 Another eBayer, from the previous auction's Q & A, pointed out that these (ATR 60's) came in two boxes, one for the transport and another for the amp. I'm not sure if this is true but it seems the seller didn't update as per his answer. Also, "..from the 1960's" ?!?! Btw, nice asking price but .. for what exactly ? ![]() |

It's gotta be old Christmas ornaments from the 1960’s. They just keep upgrading the box as the old ones fall apart.
