Can yall help me map out some purchases?
Whasup guys. I'm sitting here mapping out the next few purchases i want to make for my studio. I'm going to put back money and budget so i can save for these items. I only want about two more mics, a compressor, and a preamp. The only thing i have on the list at the time is an adk a-51. I've used that mic at a friends house and it is excellent. I need a recommendation for another mic, a good quality compressor with good gate function, and a good preamp that is almost as good as the FMR RNP, but better than the m-audio dmp3/vtb-1. I'm trying to improve my vocal sound little by little. I don't have enough cash coming in to just buy this stuff so i gotta budget. Two weeks from now, i'll be finishing up a deal with one of my beat customers. I should have about $320 from that. I'm spending all the money i make from beats on the studio. If i were to save half and spend half, what should i get first? Thanks in advance guys!

can't speak for everything on the list but i would definitely get the ksm 27.
its a great mic for vocals and can handle being used for instraments. ive used a couple other mics on the list, but not over a length of time. the shure is in my cabinet and i love it. |

Thanks for input yall. Hey bk, i already got some monitors and i just finished paying them off so i'm keepin them bad boys! As far as the list goes, the most important things i need would be the preamp, compressor, and pop filter. Anything else can wait a little while.

"trying to improve my vocal sound little by little"
you really should check out the the joemeek six q. real nice pre/comp/eq channel strip for around $400. heads down here are "loving" joe meek shit. even the joe meek mics like the JM47 are sounding good for the price (under $200). and for a pop filter you can cop a metal studio projects pop filter for around $25. the ones made from cloth are cheaper maybe but they start to stinking and catching rips and all that. other than that the rode mics are sounding pretty good. |

Why just those particular components?
Generally speaking, I recommend a Rode NT2-A microphone and a Rane MS1-b preamp. Both are very good quality and a good value. |

Also, I recommend the FMR Audio Really Nice Compressor [RNC1773.]

I heard about that rane preamp. Is it better than the dmp3 or along the same quality? I would like to hear some clips of it.

are you just looking at budget Mic pre-amps...If not save up and get a good one not just one that does the trick........there are many options..channel strips...neve..sssl makes a channel strip as well....me personally i like Universal audio http://www.uaudio.com/products/analog/6176/index.html
also check there smaller solo units...Ive used neve,avalon,..Ive sat in with side by side comparisons with engineers in L.A. while they were shopping at guitar center.....The UNIVERSAL audio was the top choice..over avalon, trident focusrite..and a few more....This is great for R&B and RAP Ive used that and avalon...and neve...I like the universal audio best...well worth the money..good investment..i know sometimes we buy things and second guess our choices..you can have faith you made in this choice, and work on the next part of getting better equip......what are you recording on....analog...p.c..? |

I'm astonished. Seems like i had TOO much soundproofing in my "closet" booth. I took all of the foam out and just left the blankets that i had in there. HUGE DIFFERENCE. I guess all that soundprooffing sucking out all my highs and boosting the lows. Now i see what they mean when they say you can have the Studio Projects c1 in the mix without adding little to no eq. It's the exact vocal sound i've been looking for. Now, i'm going to scratch off everything on that list i made. I already bought the xlr cable so it's too late for that tho. The only thing i might still buy is the preamp. The behringer preamp has a noticeable amount of noise the farther up you turn the volume. As for the pop filter, i took the screen out of my old pop filter, attached it to a binder clip, then attached the clip to the gooseneck for my old pop fiter. PERFECT!!!! The hoop for the pop filter made my vocals have a strange "phasing" effect. Sounds much better without the hoop.

Forget my last post. I'm 100% happy now. Today, i've taken out almost all of the soundproof foam, moved the mic into the corner of the booth, fumbled around with compression techniques, and finally, did a high frequency cut on my outboard mixer. I now know how to get different sounds out of the same mic. The c1 does not sound like a c1 now. I've got the exact sound that i've been trying to get since i've been buying mics (2 yrs roughly). I'm so happy i could kiss my gear, jus kiddin of course
Now i got to figure out where to put all this foam. I put it in the booth on the floor behind one of the blankets for right now. I wanna put it in my mixing room (a.k.a. bedroom) but i'm in an apartment and don't want to mess up the walls. Also, i really don't know what particular spots i need to put them in. Anywayz, thanks for your help guys. Holla |
