Question Tascam & Teac original packing

Guys,

Does anyone have or remember the original factory packing for the TASCAM 388 and TEAC 3440 ? I'm trying to recreate it (to an extent) and already have materials for it or they're on order. What I would like to know, at the very least, is where the strongest weight bearing points are on each of the recorders. This is where I'd place supports on all sides including the top.

Thanks

Daniel

Nope, decided against it! I am taking all of it with me, including the 388!

I've grown too attached to the gear which took me a long time to gather up, in such mint condition, so I'd be a fool to get rid of it. Truth be told, I got "cold feet" when I attempted to sell off the gear. I withdrew it from the market.

I then ordered custom double walled FOL type boxes and decided to recreate the packaging, which I plan to document and post the result here, in photos and text.

After tearing one of these apart I think I would look into taking to bottom off and the top and remove the power transformer, and anything else I could easily unplug out of the machine. I would take the sides off and the top metal cover and place tape over the boards to keep them from falling out.
I would remove the top cover of the reels and all of the knobs.
and place all of them in a second box. Also If it is easy to unplug the back finned heatsync and remove I would take that off also.
Weight is the enemy on shippings the 388 and if you could lighten it up you would be much better off.
If you are careful and take your time I think it could be done.
And if you dont do any of that I would put a lot of medium to soft foam on the heatsync cause when it gets stood up on it end all of the weight go there first.
Good luck Daniel and I am glad you decided to keep your stuff.

I maybe selling some of my gear in the next few weeks cause of a huge life changing thing around here but I refuse to try and ship a 388 cause i just know it would get screwed up.

Arrow I'd not go to those lengths, but...

what I've seen of the 388's original packing, was an oversized/double-heavy duty box, with major foam blocking in the corners, back & sides & another piece of cardboard laid/taped over the top of the mixer & over the plexi tape cover,... also with padding or bubble wrap in there to protect the top surface of the mixer. (Also, tape the plexi cover in place, so it doesn't move freely).

The foam blocking in the corners was not that light duty styrofoam, but it was the tougher, more resilient plastic foam blocks,... kinda what you'd find around a TV or computer monitor. It's the puffed foam blocks that are resilient and tough,... all corners to about 2" thick/each way. I believe these foam blocks on the corners were formed to the corner & reinforced with cardboard.

I wish I could describe it better, or that I had pics.

Thanks a bunch Dave and Gary! I probably would not disassemble the machine much, maybe the heatsink but I do plan on putting 4 inches of thick styro on each side and I'll try to put something together for the top. I am most sensitive to NOT placing any weight on any of the more fragile places on the units. The good news is that the machines will go on a wooden sled and will not be shipped the standard way. Still I plan to secure as per your advice, tape the tape cover lid etc .....

Anyway, back to packing ...

There's one more thing I'm wondering about ... With the 3440 or any of similar units, did the original packing materials support on the wooden sides or a couple cm into the aluminum frame. It seems a bit off that weight barred would be on those 2 wooden sides held by 4x 2 screws in total.

Arrow The original 38 packing...

was standard styro, formed to support the entire side of the machine, left and right,... kinda enveloping the sides of the 38 to a point just over the "tits", eh,... hubs.

Dave do you recall if the 388's inner packaging, that thick foam, was also present at the bottom of the unit ?
