nashunbooking is infamous around these partsnashunbooking is infamous around these parts
recording a 5150 half stack with a neumann TLM 103

about what volume should I use the amp at and how far away should i set the microphone. I am a newb, and not sure what a good distance is.

I also have a sennheiser MD421, and a shure 57...I play metal and i am wondering how to get the thick tone and clarity I have on my amp onto my computer.

using emu-1820m with cubase sx3

I'd just stick the 421 on there and play that mudsucker.

If you're set on the tlm103, I'd say try anything 6" or further. I think the volume of the amp would distort the diaphragm electronics.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm drinking Sparks and my judgement is headed into the Gulf.

Yep that's pretty much what I'd do, only do both at the same time and make sure there isn't any phasing. Don't be afraid to get the 421 right up on the grill.

I got a killer clean sound & metal sound by rigging a condensor (neumann KMS105 for clean & an SM57 dynamic for the overdrive)

I've tried TLM103 on amps but generally end up going for the dynamic as close to the cab as possible

the KMS105 recorded the amp unbelievably well, I also used a junction DI box made by palmer that goes between amp & spewker to give you a DI straight from the power amp section

I've never used a 421 although I have (& love) sennheiser MD431mkIIs & an MD43
