Talking Q= C x V

would it make any sense at all to record guitar, bass, drums, vocals, all with dynamic mics? im on a incredibly tight budget...

The mics im lookin at are shit, but do i need condensers?
(i know vocals are good with dynamics tho)

Thanks for all the help!

No...not for recording purposes atleast. Get atleast a cheap condenser to get your job done. And when recording drums, you need more than one mic. Get a condenser for vocals and some dynamics for drums, bass and guitar.

I have to disagree... What's wrong with dynamics? You could make a heck of a record with all dynamics (well, except for drum over heads maybe). But even for drum over heads, dynamics can work. You can put SM57s (or similar) on dern near anything.... guitar, bass, drums, vocals.... Woudl I personally only want to use dynamics on everything? No. But could it be done as money is tight, sure.

Depends on who you ask, and it depends on the vocalist. Definitely only use small diaphragm condensers for things like choral miking or instrument miking, as they tend to be a too flat in their response for vocals, and thus generally unflattering. Some folks like LDCs for vocals. Personally, every LDC I've tried on my voice sounds harsh to me (including some that other folks consider relatively mellow). Your mileage may vary.

For vocals, I like ribbons these days, but for a cheap solution, I also find some of the less muddy early Shure dynamics to be pretty good with a little EQ help (e.g. a 565SD or other Unisphere/Unidyne mic). I have one that I got for something like $20 on eBay....

normally condesors for overheads and vocals and dynamics for the rest ... NORMALLY. there is nothing wrong with switching out dynamic and condensors just all depends on what sound you are going for. Condesors are typically more detailed and have higher ranges but its because they have more sensitive diaphrams compared to the more or less reversed speakers in dynamics(well not ribbons but still)although this is typcially not really that noticble especially with cheaper condensors so i wouldnt really worry about it unless you have a big sound source to pick up like an overhead would and then it helps but once again not required

Why not just rent a couple of dynamics and make a song or two and see how far you get with it? If you like the sound you get, then you wont feel so insecure about spending what money you have. If you dont like the sound, you will still ahve the rest of your money.....

IF you can find a place that is willing to rent mics.......

Absolutely. You just want to capture everyone's sound, dynamic mics are fine for your circumstances.

no prob.
you can use dynamics fine as over's too, if you find some flatter (response) ones.
(but they will probably not be any cheaper than condensers)
