Allen Heath System 8 Mixer

Does anyone know anything about the quality of this mixer? EQ? Construction? Anything? I know the computer guys would not have any idea, so I thought I would post it here.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Allen-Heath-Syst...QQcmdZViewItem

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

anyone else? You can feel free to tell me if you think it's a piece. I'm obviously on a budget right now, but I figure at the price it might be the best mixer I can find right now.

No I do not. I have a Tascam M-320.

I've worked on several A&H's some below that line.

They have all been very nice in my experience and nice EQ.

A&H make about the best sounding mixers around below $10,000. I have had them, I have one and have used many. Great EQ and mic pre-amps.

Get it, love it

So could I actually make a decent recording with just the preamps in this board? I am waiting to buy a nicer preamp when I have the money, but of course I want to start recording something. Thanks again.

Back in the "good old days" before digital, your good mixer was your source of "good microphone pre-amps". That's why board like yours and higher end TASCAMs went for thousands of dollars when new, because they had all the good shit built right in.

In the more modern days, (1998 to the present) where the "standard" became Yamaha, Behringer and Mackie and digital started to become the way things got tracked, it only then became the era of the boutique high end, stand alone microphone preamp because these new cheaper mixers where just that; cheap mixers.

Cheers!

That's the best news I've heard in a while. I guess I can wait to spend 1500 dollars on a preamp now. Thanks a bunch Ghost.

Absolutely and your welcome.

Take those 1500 bones and buy some stocks in your favorite bank instead and then, in 40 years, when you retire, you'll have enough money to buy some Kraft Dinner and put a fresh set of strings on your guitar and make more music.

Cheers!

I'd say: Sell stocks and buy classic vintage guitars (or classic gear, for that matter)

Heh, I remember when “Channel strips” first started to get popular. I thought “What the hell… one channel? People are going to buy those?” Then I remembered the pet rock and thought, “Yeah, people are going to buy those.”

I’m waiting for someone to start selling Neve knobs that you can put on one channel of your behringer thingy so you can mix more smoothly on that one really important channel that will make or break your sound. Hopefully the trim knob will go up to 11 for that extra punch.

Allen & Heath really is good stuff, by the way.

I'll probably put that 1500 toward some efx processors, cables, misc. tape gear, seeing as I am just building up the home studio now. But, if I had 100,000 dollars... I would start investing in some vintage guitars Zee. I like that idea.

I have not. But from my miserable experience it's often not about the brand but rather is about how much does it weight

Isn't that the Beri unit with the inactive valve with LED backlighting?

Seriously, you want vintage, I've just inherited vintage - an Ekco SW86 radio, circa 1936 - from a great aunt who died last year. Might be an even larger project than the Ferrograph....maybe I should finish that one first...

"LED backlighting" is Uli's own (and maybe the only Uli's own ) real invention in the realm of blending new and old technology (or technology, period) which takes it to the whole new dimension.... Such invention has natural protection bilt-in within its core and thus nobody on earth would ever want to infringe on its sovereignty. Uli is a smart guy!

I played around with A&H pre-amps and pitted them against my higher end to high end stuff. The most identicle sound was from my DMP3.

The A&H sound excactly like the DMP3 ( at least the A&H 32 channel board I have)

That is all I can say as the higher end pre-amps sounded way different.

Tha A&H pre-amps also stack quite well with no crappy artifacts that I can hear.
