seagull and yamaha red label guitars

I spent my Saturday morning browsing the local pawn shops and music stores. I found two old Nippon Gakki Yamaha's, a FG-110 and FG-140. They both sounded pretty cool, especially the 110 with it's small body, but both had some space under the frets like the fingerboard had shrunk or something. Maybe an issue with the glue? Any ideas on this? They both played fine and I could'nt hear any fret buzz. Also, the 110 had a screw inside at the neck/body joint and it looked like the neck was seperating from the body. Basically a ghetto repair. Is this a complicated fix? I could get both of these guitars really cheap and I know a repair guy that charges next to nothing for repairs. I won't be able to get in touch with him until after the weekend though.

I also played a Seagull S6 cedar top guitar that sounded and played really nice. I've played alot of them but this one was kind of exceptional tone wise. It has a big rich sound but at the same time it sounds well balanced. My only concern is that it might sound boomy in front of a mic. Anyone play and record with an S6? Does it come off boomy miced up?

You should be fine. I have used a cedar topped guitar on many occasions, and they are not a problem. The trick is mic placement. A lot of people think that you mic the soundhole on an acoustic, but that is not the case. Move the mic around the hole and find the right spot. Good luck.

FWIW, I think that Seagull offers tremendous bang for the buck.
