ASCAP vs BMI?

Trying to decide which one of these to join. I've looked at both websites, and they both appear compelling.

Is one better than the other, or does it matter? I know I can't join both simultaneously.

I am in the same boat. From musicians I have talked to and everyone else, they both are about equal. You'll read sometimes that ASCAP pays higher and sometimes BMI pays higher. They come out to be about equal with things you gain from each one. I think I'm going to go with BMI, but only because a friend of mine who is already doing very well is with it. I think Paul McCartney is with ASCAP? No one has given me a definitive answer on who is better.

It would be different if they paid advances like they used too... I dont see the advantages of either one, unless your on the radio isnt the main purpose of them to collect royalties?
