I don't know how they rate, but 8 inch woofers, for $249 for the pair.....hmmmmm.

Well if I had the money I might swap them out for my wharfedale's, but as is, can't really afford it. Hope someone takes advantage of the deal (I have no relation to MF or GC, except as a happy customer) and I hope more importantly they like them. Anyways thought I would share.

My one friend has a set of BX8s and he had some trouble with bass on his last project. The review in emusician gave them a bland rating citing some muddy things happening in the bass region. Now the BX8as are an improvement. Was just at sam ash and demoed them. The new woofer design really makes them sound good,a big improvement over the BX8. The BX8s reminded me of the 8" Roland monitors and actually they probably used some of the same stuff building them. A more harsh sound in the highs.
Hey man, this is one of the most important parts of your studio, spend the money, get the good stuff.

i'm not overly fond of either the BX8's or the BX8A's. both have a really gnarly (in a bad way) high end. and i don't like the mids much either. plenty of bass though......but i wouldn't trust em. the A's are better sounding than the original BX8's, and that's prolly why they're blowing out the original ones.

i looked at em hard a few months ago. i'm running a pair of SP5B's--they're really smooth in the mids and highs....but really lacking on anything below 150.

in my looking, i liked the Event TR8's and the Event ASP8's. The ASP8's were just leaps and bounds better than anything else i listened to....just excellent sounding monitors. i'm saving my pennies.

cheers,
wade

I've seen quite a few reviews of the BX8s and most have been critical of the unpredictable low end. The SP5s and BX5s, in contrast, have received mostly very positive reviews in terms on their mids and highs (see their SOS or Future Music reviews), but the low end's definitely weak. Adding a sub to one of these smaller models produces a very workable low-cost system, which I've been using for over a year now. With some careful integration, the freq response across the spectrum is pretty flat and predictable. From all I've seen and heard, I'd choose the 5"+sub over the 8" model any day, but then again, I generally prefer the flexibility of a 2.1 setup in my quirky (untreated) little studio.

J.
