New Blues Jam posted

Hey crew- I just whipped up a quick mix of a blues jam we did in the studio a few weeks back. We were just testing mics and new gear when an old friend stopped by (2:30 am). So he grabbed a strat and we layed down a slow blues in Am.

Click on the top one - "Slow Blues in Am".

Give a listen and let us know whatcha think. Thanks! -Rez

Very nate night indeed.
I really like the guitar tone.
The bass player is doing a great job synching with the drumming - together they make a nice big fat bed for the axe to grind on.
Reminds me of a few of the bluesier moments in Budgie's rep. as well as Tea for Two on Presence by Zep.
At 2.38 it became even more Page blues like.
Just needs a "bay bee bay bee bay bee bayyyy beee, who's gonna see me home this time? I've met 7 different women and each one reminds me, reminds me reminds me, reminds me of you. Why'd you go why you'd go why'd you go when I was just, I was just coming back to you...yes I was " etc.kind of wail over the top.
Oh, oh, just at the bass solo - tastey - & the chords under pinning it are terrific.
The bloody drummer is doing so well I keep forgetting he's there - that's a compliment - really.
Bummer ending though.
Congrats fellows.
Top Shelf - esp. for a jam.
Cheers

I think I have an ideas as to why this piece works so well...
I reckon they've managed to score some D.H.I. plug ins.
Free download too.
Really hard to get for homerecorders like me though. I just can't get the wherewithall to get some...

Signal path

OK, the track was recorded live in a one-room basement studio, roughly 14x20x7. I've been trying to keep things really basic and just capture the vibe of what I'm recording. I love the fact that this track "feels" like a late-night track. I also LOVE the guitar tone we were getting.

Microphones:

- AT-4033 on guitar cab
- I think it was a SM57 on the bass cab (I'll check tonight)
- 2 Peluso CEMC6s on drum overheads (close to an ORTF config)
- AT-2500 on kick

Preamp: True Systems Precision 8
Soundcard: RME Fireface 800
Software: Cubase SX3

Aside from reverb- there's very little processing on the tracks.
-No EQ on any of the tracks - just mic positioning.
-Mild compression on the drums (2:1).
-some compression on bass.

That's about it.

Guitar:
Fender American Strat (no mods)
Fulltone OCD (drive around 2 oclock, hp mode, tone just left of 12 oclock)
Mesa Boogie Mark IV -- Rhythm channel 1 (2x12 cab closed back cabinet)

Bass
late 80s Peavey 4 string
SWR 750X (Goliath III and Son of Bertha cabinets)

Yours truly on Drums
Mapex Black Panther Snare
Tama Rockstar kick and toms
Zildjian HiHats, "A" Crash and "K" CrashRide
Sabian "AAX" Crash

I've been busy recording other artists, so this was the first time I actually got a chance to play drums in over six months - I forgot how much I miss it!!! Kinda hard to set levels and engineer from behind the kit, but it sounded OK I guess.

All my clients have been very happy with the guitar tones I've been getting in the studio. I usually use a three-mic technique, but lately I've been able to dial in a great sound with just an LDC (in just the right spot).

I usually go direct with the bass, but this was just a jam so I miked the cabinet.

Questions and comments welcome! Tnx again, Rez

I think it turned out great, especially with as little processing as you did. Has a live feel, but still has a good sound...nice and full for so little. Cool stuff man...
