Snare Drum Pitch - Is it a preference thing??

I'm trying to get some info on setting the "Pitch" of my drums that are here in my home studio...

Right now my snare is set up about one full turn past lowest posible clear tone.

Is there a "standard" starting place for setting the pitch?? (The Res. head is set at the lowest clear tone.

So far on the rest of the kit they are all set up the same way - lowest clear tone. (Is this good, or do they (the batter heads) need to be tighter.......or agian, is it just a preference type of thing??

Thanks,
Rick

Everything's preference, but -

Most guys playing contemporary music or "Modern Rock" (dare I say) crank pretty good on those heads. The drum will sound like a timbale when the snares are not engaged if you want this sound.

Now, if you want a more classic 70s wetter sound, it's gonna be tuned more loosey goosey as you describe.

Well I'm a big fan of the drum sounds of the 70's........even though I'm not really into that music very much.......I feel the drums are a lot more present and clearer than in today's music......I had just chalked it up to the recording technique.

I'll experiment a bit, but not being a drummer it's hard to tell

Thanks,
Rick
