Studio Monitors

Well I am finally ready to buy my studio monitors and wanted to get some opinions. My budget is $300-$400 for the pair. I have always thought I was going to buy the KRK RP5's when it was time. The guy in our local music store tried to sell me some Events but wasn't ready to buy yet.

After doing some more reading on here, I saw a couple of people mention that getting a 6" woofer was worth the extra money and gave a more "honest" sound.

So I guess my questions is, should I spend the extra $100 getting the 6" woofer on the KRK RP6's? Go with some Events? Or is there anything else someone may recommend in my price range that would be better for me.

Thanks in advance ~

I just read something in another post.

Do I need an amp too for the monitors??!? I am hoping not. I hope I can just run them from the board outputs...So I am guessing I also need some TRS cables (a pair?)

I don't know what all you have for a room, and stuff, but I have some inexpensive Rolands, 4" woofer and all. They sound pretty good. They are pretty close to me, 2' maybe, sitting at roughly ear level. I have them set very similarly to the sound of my home stereo. I sit about 15' from it, and its pretty nice...200 watt Sony, very good speakers and a sub. I'm not saying you don't need a bigger woofer, but depending on your room and setup, you can probably get anything decent set up to use properly. My little desktop nearfields have good bass, and highs. I was surprised it was that easy to set up. Commercial CD's sound great on them, unless you step too far away. They just aren't setup for that. I think you can get either of the ones you are looking at setup well, if the room is right, and the position of them with your ears is right.

Oh, forgot to add, it looks like these are already powered. And personally, I'd probably pop the extra cash if you can, just so you don't wind up wishing you had later....

Yea, I have a REALLY small space (about 6.5' x 6.5') and going to be setting the monitors on my desk shelves. Just wondered if KRK was still my best choice in that price range. It used to be (according to people on here), but as tyime goes by, new things come out, so I didnt know

Cool, no amp needed!

Thanks Dog

go with it

I have the KRK RP 8's- Passed up Truth's, M-Audio, Events. . .etc.
Love the sound. . .tight.
Not sure about the 6's
Would've gotten the M-Audio 8's but sounded like they had some type of internal EQ. . .liked the M-Audio 5's though.
If that helps. . .but yeah go with a 6in woofer and up 8 is even better

B&H Photo-Video-ProAudio has the M-Audio BX8a for $399.99/pair with free shipping (at least they did through last week). Shipping on a pair of powered monitors is very costly, so that makes the deal even sweeter. I listened to both the KRK PR8 and the M-Audio at a local Guitar Center and liked them both equally. I went with the M-Audio because I could find no really glowing reviews of KRK equipment.

Thanks DH,

Anyone else tried the M-Audios or KRK RPs? I remember seeing a thread or poll sometime back where KRK was the best choice for under $400, but not sure if thats still accurate.

Anyone else have any opinions?

I say if you can get your hands on a pair of yamaha msp5`s go for it.

I have a pair and they`ve served me well, I`ve tried some krk`s fostex and maudio, but I think the msp5 shines through as a winner.

I've got the KRK RP5's. I really like them at that price. The sweet spot is pretty small, so positioning is everything...and that will change from room to room...mine's pretty large and dead as a door nail.

The mids and upper mids are very, very clean on these..which was of the biggest importance to me with the type of music I work with most. The little 5's deliver good, tight bass...no, nothing like an 8" but better than my old Tannoy PBM 6.5's and again, very clean without any boxiness.

I'm not a fan of the KRK 10 sub tho...but then again, I'm not a huge fan of any sub.

Yea, my room is super small (6.5' x 6.5') its just a closet with a desk in there and some absorbers hehe. I think I am going to order the KRK RP6's, but I am gonna wait it out a couple of more days to see if any other advice here or research that I do points me in a different direction.

Thanks again

Hrm, just saw another thread / poll where the Wharfdale 8.2a monitors blew away the KRK RP6s in the poll votes...hrm

Heres the Wharfs

Anyone else tested the 2 side by side or have an opinion on which may be the way for me to go in my super small room?

Thanks again
