hooking up synth to sonar 4

i'm a newbie at "PC" recording and those manuals are kind of confusing sometimes!

i want to hook up my microkorg synth to my PC and monitor/record through sonar.

i have an HP dual-core and a Roland ED UM-2 (USB) interface.

before trying to hook up, i'm getting a message to choose midi outputs. there is one listed in "midi devices" (microsoft midi mapper) but it won't select and i keep getting error message "no output selected"

can someone please tell me how to do the output selection thing and then how do i go about setting up the interface?

thanks

I'm not familiar with the Roland UM-2 so I've just looked it up on google.

It looks to me just like any other USB/MIDI interface, this one being very similar the the MIDISPORT 2X2 that I use.

Normally, one you have correctly installed the drivers for you USB device, Sonar (or indeed any MIDI software) should automatically detect that your device is present.

Sounds like to me that you have either not installed or correctly configured your UM-2 so you need to start there.

And those instruction manuals are crucial, especially when it comes to initial device set-up on any windows software.

The MIDISPORT for instance requires that you load the drivers BEFORE you plug in the device. I'd be surprised if the UM-2 is not the same.

Have a look at that first and them come back and let us know how you're getting on.

regards

andy

i still can't get windows to recognize the drivers.

it won't allow me to go to the location (program files) to find the drivers.

i tried installing again and it automatically went to program files. it's weird because the first time it went to system 32.

whats going on???

btw, i don't have the manual. the unit was given to me

UM-2 Manual from Roland

Don't know what's going on there...

My Midisports are a breeze to install... With the Midisports you have to make sure that you don't plug the devices in before you've installed the drivers. Once you've finished installing the drivers you plug in your USB device and the Plug and Play business should take over.
