Metal Guitar once again

I started all over again. I decide to follow everyones advice. I recorded my guitar with one sm57 and panned right 100%. I overdub a second track with a slightly different tone and panned left 100%. It's sounds better, but I need everyones input. The recording is what is coming out of the amp. No plugins were used. No BBE sonicmaxizer, no eq, no compression, nothing.

Im starting to believe the source of my problem is my crate combo amp!

It's hard to tell without it being part of a mix, but it sounds usable...maybe a bit too much on the low side. Try a high-pass filter that cuts everything below 100 Hz. Otherwise, it kinda had a Black Sabbath / Slayer kinda sound.

it very well could be the combo. when i recorded a live demo for this one band with a friend's firepod i thought it was the preamps in the firepod that made the guitars sound amazing with only single micing, but it was just because they had a mesa boogie half stack and a 5150 half stack cranked. and i thought i made them sound good!

this version does sound better, but it still has some going to be a really nice metal tone. how close do you have the sm57 to the speaker? you want it right up in there, against the grill/cloth, pointed wherever you have learned to point it. (i like it best right where the cone meets the paper) and make sure your amp is LOUD! that may get rid of the distant sound.

I tried cutting the frequencies below 100hz and what a difference. Thanks David that helped. I will continue working on it.

try cutting the really high frequencies as well and see if that helps. Say about 5k and up.

did you have your amp loud or not when you recorded? If you want it less distant sounding then I would close mic it about 3 inches away from the cone. Crank your amp as loud as you can. Or as loud as the amp gets until it starts sounding shitty.

in this recording I didn't have the mic preamp high enough. I only used one sm57 about 1 inch way from the grill (centered on the cone). I had my amp cranked up. I did recorded the guitar and cut low (100hz and down) and the high (5k and up), it does sound a hell lot better, but still not quite what Im looking for. Today I played around with the sound of my amp, and my 90% certain that I need to invest in a better amp. Ideally Im looking for a sound the METALHEAD has acheived.

Turn up the mids and turn down the gain. It might be hard to get a great sound out of a Crate. I haven't run across one that mics up worth a damn (for a distorted sound, clean, these things are great)

yeah what farview said. I don't know if you already knew that or not. Are you happy with the tone you get from your amp when it's not miked? Also, try two mics. Metalhead uses two 57's. One on axis and one coming from a 30 or 40 degree angle off axis. Both are close to the amp. No more than a couple inches. Do at least two takes with two mics on each take.

I think I resolved my problem. First I decide to use my behringer ultragain tube mic preamp, instead of the Nady 8 channel preamp (which works ok with drums). I also turn down the gain on the amp. I rerecorded the guitar with one sm57 and panned the first performance hard left and the second performance hard right.
What a fucking difference. Im a happy camper. The Nady preamp is going into trash.

hey farview, ever hear of the crate palomino(sp?) tube amp? I tried one out at guitar center. I wasn't bad. But my mesa is better (haha I just bought the amp can you tell?)

Nope. I haven't run across that one yet. The voodoo was one of their better ones, but I still didn't like it much.
