if i were to record a vocal track with an sm57 mic what frequencies would i need to mess with in eq to get a nice sound out of it?

FajitaTone is on a distinguished road
That would depend on how the vocalist sounds.

You might not need to mess with any, as Fajita says it depends on the voice as well as how that voice is sitting with the music around it.

The frequency response for the SM57 has a huge boost from 2k to about 10k so you will get close to a 10db boost in that range. Not that that is a bad thing, just keep it in mind, and use it to your advantage.

that's like asking if I got a Honda would I need to put Michelin tire on it.

EQing is NOT a preset for any situation. Don't worry about what other people EQ because there are so many other factors that go into it than just the microphone. The person, the room, the speakers, even the preamp you use all depends on what kind of coloration happens to your original signal and whether you would benefit from EQ or not.
Your best bet....get an SM57, plug it in and record. Then listen to find out what you like and don't like.

yes, depending on the voice and your recording chain, you can get a workable decent vocal sound with a 57
