Recording in seperate cities

Hi, there...hope you guys can help me out.

my friend and I would like to begin recording an ongoing show. we used to have a college radio show and would like to be able to record a talk show of sorts that we could then have friends download as an .mp3. Just a fun hobby and a way to keep in touch.

Only problem is we live in different cities....and we're not too technically saavy, but can pick things up pretty quickly. So, we're wondering if there's a way to record online (or some other way) in which we can simultaneously record as if we were in the same booth.

Any thoughts? Where to begin? etc.?

Thanks,
JChimpo

My thought is you better get used to doing overdubs. The rate of data transmission and latency issues will prevent simultaneous recording and monitoring. Somebody may come on here and prove I'm wrong, but I doubt it. Transmitting sound nearly instantly is doable. Transmitting high quality sound considerable distances instantly is a bitch. Of course, if you lay a great mucking fiberoptic cable from your house to your partner's, it may get possible. If you are trying to do it with a highspeed internet connection, I think you are screwed.-Richie

why not phone each other, but both of you record?
That way, you both hear each other through the phone, and can converse in real time without hte latency issues etc, but you'e also got a quality recording of both of your voices, which you can then email and mix?

Then you can make your mixdown as if you were in the same room...

Great link, Markaholic! I wonder what the bit rate and depth of the on line session is, and what happens when your call waiting kicks in.-Richie
