Recording Inspiration

Not really sure if this is where i should be posting this, though it is relevant to all that record. And i know this is where the big boys play, so i thought i might get some "decent" responces here.
Anyway im sure alot of you, record your own material as well as work with other bands. Here's the deal: When recording your own stuff is it really possible for anyone to act impartially as a producer, with a bigger picture in mind, or do you get caught up in a world of self critiscising.
And secondly what are your ways of keeping inspired in a project? Recently i have been recording an album of my own stuff, but i keep hitting a brick wall of doubt. I have actually dumped most of the project 3 times because it didnt feel right, now when i go back to re-record it is very hard. This is usually not a problem when i work with other bands. Is this a personal thing? Do any of you have this problem? Thanks!

I try to stick with one project (one song) at a time, but I too often find myself discouraged, or unsure of where to take it at times. Rather than scrape the whole project at this point, I do one of several things. 1) Turn everything off and won't even go into my "studio" 2) turn the PC and racks off, and pick up my guitar/bass/drum sticks and zone out for awhile playing just whatever comes out. or 3) move on to another project, already in process or start something completely new. I try not to give myself time frames when it comes to my own music, when it's done, it's done. As far as inspiration goes, it the creation of music in general that inspires me, that never goes away. If I don't like the direction of something, I take a different route until I find my way to my destination. You'll know when you're there, just don't give up because it didn't happen as fast as you'd like. I've said it once, and I'll say it again. Time is free, use as much as you'd like.
