have anyone ever mixed or mastered something without boosting any EQ what so ever? if so how would you get it to sound crisp without having to boost eq and get phase shift?

I would have thought that it would depend entirely on the material that you are mixing and mastering.

From what I have read in the recent past, if you are say recording a string ensemble then, providing your room is acoustically treated correctly and you have all the right gear in terms of mics and recording hardware, it should be possible to produce a mix that does not need any EQ tweeking whatsoever.

Nowadays however, it appears that EQ is being used in more artistic or expresive terms and is an art form itself.

But that's just my opinion

I almost always use cuts, when I eq something. But it all depends on what sound I want, and how I think I can achieve that.

It's called 'getting it right in the tracking phase'. Do some searching on the name Chuck Ainley and his engineering work with Mark Knopfler. I'm not promising they necessarily use zero EQ all the time, but their goal is certainly to get a great sound while keeping the signal chain as short as possible by using intelligent and refined recording technique.

When I started out making sample-based music in the early '90s, I don't think I'd even HEARD of compression or EQ. So everything I did was as is. No EQ. No compression. For years.

Sounded like sh*t though.

Then I got my first studio engineer job in the late '90s, and the guy that trained me introduced me to them.

Did a project yesterday - Two tracks needed the tiniest little bit of narrow cut around 2.5kHz - The rest was flat.

The "crisp" sound was there long before it got to my doorstep (which is how it's supposed to work).
