Overtime - mix feedback please

I recorded and mixed this using the feedback received here on previous tunes. So I'm hoping to get some feedback on this mix to see what you think. There's an older version mixed and collab'd by Llarion as well on the same page so comparisons are very welcome.

The tune is called Overtime Remix 3/2006

I think it sounds pretty good man. I like the bass tone, and choice of notes. The only nit I could have, would be that it wouldn't hurt to bring the bass a bit more up front. It sits ok, but with the guitar tone, and where the vox are, the bass has plenty of room. Just a nit though, and it doesn't really affect the tune.

Nice job man.

Hey Gerry,

I love this tune of yours amongst others!

The only comment I have is that the drums are buried in the mix, I would like the mids boosted on the snare along with some highs to give it more presence and some volume on the kick!

I just had another lesson and I really like the bass line!

Apart from that Gerry, I love this tune and I am going off for a listen to "Come let Me Love You"... ....Again!!......"I see you on the street, .....but you just look away"

Great Stuff!

I'm working on my loving overtime!

Gorty

Good arrangement. Lots to like in this... vox, bass part, gtr soloing. I think the guitar, except for the solo, is a little too distorted for the song... just a bit too fuzzy. The gtr solo sounds so good you should put some licks between the vocal phrases. The singing's really well in tune.

Also not mentioned ... clever lyrics. There's a nice marriage of lyrics and music here, well thought out.

Ido,
This is really into a slightly faster Slowhand groove.
hobbestheprince & Timothy Lawler have my ditto for constructive comments. I'm not sure if I agree with Dogman about the bass as I'm listening with h/phones & it sounds sweet - could be different with air to get through.
From me that comes down to just a reduction in distortion & a really big TOP SHELF stuff mate.
Cheers

Great song man!

I'm filling in with previous speakers about boosting the middle/high to give the snare some presence... That would make it swing a bit more, because the tune has the potential.

Less fuzz on the guitar would also help the tune to stay clear, you don't have to bury this lovely song, mate!

I'm getting small wibbs from Dire Straits/Knofler, and that's by me a good thing!

/Chip

Awesome, I love this song, straight ahead rock!
Mix sounds cool to me, the only thing that sticks out to my ears is the guitar. I agree with the "fuzz" comments above. You still need a dirty rocky tone to drive this, but less on the high end and maybe more on the higher-mid, mid IMO might fit better.
Good work here, enjoyed it

Definite improvement over the other mix... The guitar is a bit out fron for my taste, and the drums don't push it very hard... Well, I demonstrated my opinions on the piece already, but this is definitely a nice jump over v1.0. The bass line is a noticeable improvement..

Oh, and I agree with Tim, the guitars are worthy of 'tween-phrase noodling...

Hey everyone - Thanks for listening and all the great feedback!

I haven't had a chance to respond to the comments until now - I'm out of town visiting family on vacation...

Dogman - I thought this was bass heavy on my monitors (lol). I have to work on my bass mixing (eq and volume). I find it's one of the harder things to mix.

Gorty - I can hear now that drums (especially snare) are not as hot as they could be. I think I mixed them down a touch to keep a hot kick down but ended up taking down the whole kit. Maybe I could eq the kick down instead. Glad you liked the bass line, I found it really helped complete the song.

Tim - the rhythm guitar was recorded direct from the back of my amp, and it's not as chunky/clean as I got when mic'ing on the collab version. Glad you like the solo guitar sound. That was my strat - I was inspired to use it after hearing Rami and Gorty recently. I liked the vocals on this compared to the collab myself. I'm working on vocals lately.

hobbestheprince - glad you liked the lyrics. I usually always start with lyrics when writing a tune, and the melody builds from there.

rayC - Slowhand groove is cool to hear. I listened to the bass on several systems and found it varies a bit. Still trying to get it more "universal" but it's tough. Yes, the distortion is direct recording related - mic'ing would be better choice, I agree. Oh well, that's why I post these. Sometimes I just overlook these things and it's great to get your feedback...

Chip Saffire - yep, need some changes on snare and guitar as noted above...Dire Straits/Knoffler wibbs are cool by me.

Snakedog5050 - again, guitar changes duly noted...will look at the eq settings as you suggest. I find my low/mid/high on my amp are very subtle but I think the board eq's can make more impact on the sound. I'll look at that.

Llarion - my collaborator/mixer/master engineer on version 1.0! Thanks for the mixing lessons on the first version (my first HR tune) and subsequent songs. The advice received has helped me grow - but I still have lots to learn! I've had fun trying to get a mix down after our collab version. (I have to say I like the vocals on this latest version though-more in tune. And your drums were way better, not to mention the sparkle on the mix!). Noodling between phrases is new idea for me, so I'll have to see what I can come up with. I tend to approach the song from a rhythm guitar perspective first and lead last....

Thanks Again Everyone!

Well, heck, if I'd known you were gonna do v2.0, I'd have made my drum track available to you to use if you wanted...

Very cool, one of your strongest songs, once again you got that Clapton thang going on. Good beat, catchy stuff.

The fuzz guitar? Its okay. I have never been a big fan of fuzz guitar, but this sounds like your typical "fuzz guitar". You either like it or you dont, its a fuzz guitar

Mix seems pretty good on my system, not much to nitpick here. Another strong song.

Hey DavidK - thanks for listening and the positive comments. I'd like to get a few more like this - just need to get some ideas down and work on them. Thanks Again!
