a couple of Marshall's...

I have been offered the chance to buy a marshall amp at what I think is a good price. I trust the person selling the amps and Im sure that they are in good shape...the thing is, the amp will be shipped to me so Im not sure which I should pic. He has 2 100 watt heads, and 2 4X12 cabs. The heads to choose from are the G100RCD and a VS100. I have done some reading and it seems that the G100RCD would be the winner...but Id like some opinions...the cabs situation will be a lot easier to choose...one is a JCM 800 Lead 1960...the other is a VS Lead 412. Ill be all over the JMC 800 cab. No matter which head and cab combo that I choose, the price is $500....is this too much for this amp???

$500 for a 100w Marshall and 4X12 cab sounds like a good (maybe great)deal to me.

No they are not tube amps.

The JCM cab is worth $350-500 depending on condition and who is buying.
Are they original speakers?

Most important, make sure the speakers haven't been tampered with. I BELIEVE that the jcm800 cabs are loaded with Celestion Greenbacks, which are great speakers. Just watch out that they haven't been pulled out and replaced. Even if you see Celestion labels on the speakers, make sure it's not the Black Widow speakers. Not that they are bad, but they don't have even close to the sound of the Greenbacks, it's a totally different ball game. Cabinets are a touchy business when you go used, becuase god knows what's been done to the speakers, especially if you can't peak in before you buy. If, of course, the guy is someone you trust, then you shouldn't be worried. But it's always good to double check, in my opinion.

Marshall likes to shove a variet of speakers in their cabs. Greenbacks are in my 1960AX cab.

The LEAD cab I think is either G12T-75 or G12M-70...while the Vintage cab is Vintage 30's.

I will ask him what is in it at the moment...not sure if he has ever changed them or not. I do already have a Fender 2 X 12 cab with greenbacks in it...guess I could trade one out. Ill be mainly recording with the cab so one good speaker would get the job done.
