VST Plugins

Which are the best? The ones with GTP+Sonar are okay but not really very well matched to real effects units and seem to be limited. Anyone know any decent plugin packs?

UAD-1 is an obvious choice. If you have limited funds, Voxengo makes good plugs for the $$. What plugs do you need? Reverb, comp & EQ, or something more?

well my soundcard makes it difficult to make a good recording of my amp so a good distortion plug would be good but i already have: Native instruments guitar Rig.

A good delay would be nice and some good vocal editing plugins though i have autotune and mic modeler more for tweaking the track using effects.

thanks.

Sounds like you may need a sound card first. Good plugs won't help if you don't have a decent signal chain to begin with. Google for some free plug-in sites. Kjearhaus (or however you spell it) makes some good freebies. Save your money for the signal path.

Definatly, I'd make sure I had decent mics, preamps, and soundcard before I worried too much about plugins. You may change your mind about some of the plug-ins you have if you clean up your signal chain. Maybe even work on getting a few new guitar accessories. Just remember, if there was definatly something you have an excessive ammount of, it's time. Use it to your advantage and do it right the first time.

I've been hearing so much about Voxengo plugs.

But I haven't tried any yet.

A lot of people rave about this compressor....

I've been getting into Perfect Space and really like what I'm hearing, but you have to upgrade to Sonar 5 to get it.

Did you use SIR before that?

I'm curious as to whether you think it's better or the same as SIR.

The Voxengo Plug I use the most by far is elephant (mastering limiter). Compared to others I've tried (including the waves L2, L3) it seems to just have a better sound than those, and does a great job of not crunching the music if you don't want it to. I also have GlissEQ and it is very nice, though the Sonitus EQ is very good as well. What version of Sonar are you using? What do you feel is limiting in the plugs?

Voxengo's Soniformer is a great tool. It is basically a mult-band comp, but it gives you something like 30 bands. You can really shape something without mauling it once you get the hang of it. Big plus for Voxengo that they let you download full-function demos.

Gliss EQ is good. I'm evaluating HarmoniEQ at the moment - I may buy it too. I have not been tempted by Voxengo's comp's because I've been using my UAD-1 for those. I should really sit down and compare sometime.

I think it is a little better - Perfect Space in Sonar v5 vs SIR, that is. More configurability and you can run it down at 64 samples worth of latency. Much better than the enforced 20msec latency with SIR.

Ciao,

Q.

No, haven't used that.

I've used Pantheon quite a bit but I think it's sort of so so.

I keep thinking about UAD but I hear of people having problems with them.

So... not worth the upgrade to 5.0.

I'm still wrestling with the upgrade - and my the main reasons would be Perfect Space and V-Vocal (that is the name, right?). But already having SIR and Autotune, I'm having trouble whipping out the old credit card.

Maybe more importantly, is Perfect Space less of a hog than SIR, and does it use the same impluse files?

Keep that card in your pocket another six months for v6.0....

V-Vocal is nice, but doesn't do anything that AutoTune doesn't already although I like the ability to easily re-size the screen in V-Vocal.

...and yes, PerfectSpace does seem to work with the impulses I collected for SIR for NoiseVault and other places.

Much better usage of resources too.

Ciao,

Q.

kvr audio is a great site for listing free vst plugins. There are so many it is hard to choose! I think in general some of the vst synths are very well regarded...

Regarding vst effects, I would agree that kjeurhaus (or however it's spelled) is good. SIR is fantastic. A lot of the free vst plug ins are sort of experimental too, although I confess I haven't tried many of the weird ones.

Speaking of free plug-ins, are there any out there that are compatible with Sonar 4:PE?

Here is what I want: An arpeggiator that you can just tell it to play a certain chord. Yep.

But dude, I downloaded a guitar amp sim, and it kicks ass! I ran a drum track i made through it, and it sounds REAL! (if, by real, you mean slightly poor quality).

Pretty well all free VST plug ins should be compatible with Sonar 4PE because of the VST wrapper. READ THE MANUAL!
