Outboard Mastering?

Does anyone do outboard mastering? That is leaving the computer going through outboard devices then returning back to the computer. How what type outboard devices do you use?

thanks, garrett

That's all we do here at Euphonic. Analog outboard used:
Sontec MES-432 C9 EQ
Crane Song Ibis-M EQ
Pendulum Audio OCL-2 compressor
Crane Song STC-8-M compressor
Summit WI-200

Me too... Did analog and loved it - Tried to love digital - Ran like hell back to analog like a long lost lover.

Although admittedly (and I would imagine I'm not alone in this) a lot of "corrective" anomalies are taken care of in digital before the analog chain in many cases (clicks & pops, noise reduction, etc.)

Gear is here - http://www.massivemastering.com/html/massive_gear.html

If the source is digital I also agree with John.

I usually like to "fix the mix" before it hits the converter then it goes off to the analog rack (for the majority of cases). Limiting is then done on the way back in digital.

Essentially I think it's still hybrid for all of us, some things digital, some things analog. Best of breed as they say.

Yeah mastering for me has become truly hybrid.

Here's how my signal get's mastered:

Mixed 32 or 24-bit .wav file ->
MOTU Analog un-balanced output ->
Analog EQ, coloration, compression, limiting ->
MOTU Analog un-balanced input ->
Recorded as 32-bit .wav file ->
Normalized to -0.1. ->
Dithered (if downsampling) ->
16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit depending on client's request ->
CD/DVD/DAT/etc...
