Pro Tools le 7 MIDI

Folks,
I have created a MIDI track in le7. When I strike the keyboard or the drum machine(I have tried both), I see the level meter moving but I don't hear any sound. Yes, I tried to create an audio track and change it's input to the same input settings that I have for the MIDI track. The problem is that I cannot select the MIDI device on the Input selector of the Audio Track. It will only allow me to select "in 1-2 Stereo" or "Bus 1-32 Stereo" The MIDI data is there but I can't hear it. The only way I can hear it is if I send the output to the PC soundcard....which obviously is not a part of the mixing process....Please help.

To "hear" the MIDI, you need to sent that data to some kind of synthesiser... MIDI itself has no sound. When you're routing it to your PC card, you're simply accessing the built-in general MIDI sounds - what you need to do is instruct ProTools on where to send your MIDI data, for example to a rewire divice like Reason (which I believe still comes free with ProTools, in a 'lite' form). Then in Reason, you can select whichever instrument you like to be 'played' by your MIDI track.

You make perfect sense. However, now I need to figure out how to pull those sounds off of Reason Adapted. I have opened Reason but can't really figure out how to send its instrument data to my MIDI track. I guess that I will be good to go once that happens. I will let you know what happens. No problem! In reason, you set everything up like a rack, so create a mixer and then add one of the synths (the NN-XT is the one for more 'realistic' samples, for example). Choose your patch on the synth, and it will automatically route to channel 1 of the mixer, and then in Protools you can insert a rewire device (I believe it's in the 'Instruments' plug in menu and chose which channel you want, in this case 1. Then you can ad more synths and route them to different protools MIDI tracks.

Are you using soft synths or hard ware synths? If you are using a software instrument, you need to create an instrument track and go to your mix window.

At the top of the track, you will need to choose what instrument you want to sound (Xpand for example). Raise your fader and that should work.
