Decent vox compressor

Well, I think the last thing I need for my beginning studio is a compressor. Was eyeing the 166XL, but then read it's good for drums and nto vox. The RNC gets great reviews, but I'd love something with 2 channels and rack mountable. Does it matter what music it will be? It will be used for r&b vocals, jazz vocals, saxophone, some guitar (acoustic and electric), bass, and I think that's it. I'd like to get something under $200 used. I'm sorry if this has been beat to death, but just want to see if there is something better based on my uses for it. I was even checking out the 163's, but I'd like the features of the 166XL. I need sleep!

In that price range, there's not much better than an RNC, IMHO. They run @$100-125 used, so you could conceivably get a pair for your budget amount. Keep in mind that they are stereo units, but do not operate as dual mono units.

Why do you need 2 channels if you're doing vocals? Just curious.

For cheap, I recommend a used Symetrix 501.

i have a Symetrix 501 . it has its place. but you may be better off with an RNP if you can't locate a Symetrix 501.

I have a 501 also. I still prefer the RNC for vocals - YMMV. On the other hand, the 501 is great for bass which is where I use it almost exclusively.

RNC is great, it is almost undetectable, sometimes good sometimes I lke to "hear" it more. Then I use a DBX 160A http://cgi.ebay.com/DBX-160A-160-A-C...QQcmdZViewItem

Well, I'll be using it for other things as well. Possibly in a live environment as well with vocals, sax, and other instruments. Answer the question?

If you can get a good deal on an ART Pro VLA, I'd spring for it.

Agreed. I have a bunch of mid-level compressors (Joe Meek, Focusrite, TL Audio, plug-ins, etc) but I usually just stick with the Art Pro VLA.
