The human ear.
This question is only slightly easier to answer than "What is the meaning of life?". |

a piece of straight wire
which is then hooked up to an amplifier to make up for the lost gain. no really. FET based circuits seem to be amongst the really transparent. they would be transformerless and have a high input impedance. the human ear is not transparent. it compresses loud signals automatically. the mind can provide some tastey eq . |

Channel strips are going to be less clean and transparent by the nature of what they do. A channel strip will typically have compression and eq, as well as the amplifier. So already the goals of the equipment have changed somewhat from "straight wire with gain".

I've used the Great River MP2H a lot and it's very transparent.
