Please help a beginner out please

Last time I posted I didn't get any replies. My dilemma started when I was rearragning my living room so that I could fit a 88key synth in so I had to make some moves.

Quote:
Hello all, I'm trying to make my living room multi functional as a home recording studio as well as a living room. I just bought a new Yamaha S90ES and will have to rearrange things to make room for it. My living room is where I will be doing some recording (until I find a better place I can work on treating for sound), mixing, and entertaining. Here's my space, but just not sure the best way to place my keyboard and desk. I will have my monitors (Maudio BX8A's) on the computer desk. Please offer any suggestions/opinions.
Thanks!

I then started thinking about using my old L-shaped desk instead, which would free up more space so here's my second post.
Quote:
Ok here's what I think I will do. I have an L shaped desk that I didn't want to use, mainly because it is wher eI do my school work/reading/planning, etc. but to save money I think I will put it back into action. Here's a few pics of it in my old apartment.

My biggest concern was the monitor placement. Thought it would look tacky with one monitor stand on the side. The other I can place on the shelf. I will move my old computer desk into my bedroom

And place that where the keyboard was set to go.

In the corner where the old L shaped computer desk was I think that would be the perfect place to treat the walls for a vocal booth. and close it in at a slant, with something... what I don't know yet. So, it would for some kind of a triangle
What do you guys think. That sounds like a perfect setup, with what I have right?
I'm really asking for some good opinions/suggestions with what I have to work with. Please advise as you can.

Well I didn't respond cause I am confused. Are you saying that you can treat the place and you wanna know how, or are you asking for good arrangement ideas if you aren't treating? Also I don't get if you are going to be using both rooms or just one.

Yes, I am looking for the best arrangement ideas. I would like to do as much treatment to the room as I can without tearing up the walls. So, I could add bass traps, foam, and other things like that.
I will be using both rooms. I am wanting to build a vocal booth in the bedroom, but that may be a month away. In the meantime I will be using the living room for mixing and recording. I just want some to make sure I set it up the best way possiblte. Sorry for the confusion. Perhaps, that is why no one else has replied.

Ok, so here is the plan I am going with for now. I'll include some pictures I just took. Forgive the quality it's dark and I have crappy camera.

The wall where the tv will go.

This is the actual corner the computer desk will go in.

On the opposite angle of the room, where the monitors will be facing is an opening to my kitchenette... will this yield a problem?

I'm hoping with providing pictures and descriptions someone will be able to help me out.
Thanks again, if nothing this time then I'll just have to try everything out on my own.

JB,

You don't want to be facing a corner because that puts another corner behind you which focuses the reflected sound back toward you. Ideally you'll have the speakers centered on one wall, facing the long way down the room as shown in the attached image.

You know with all the space you seem to have, I'd suggest Ethan's idea too. Pull that desk away from the wall, put the speakers on stands behind it and place then correctly for your monitors, bass trap all the corners, see where that gets you, and who knows maybe you wont have to do anymore.

I may do that. I was thinking if I went with this RTA desk
I could save some room and keep my keyboard on the desk as well. Just don't want any kind of awkward feeling while playing.

jb,

Personally I hate those kinds of desks. They're huge and heavy, and cost much more than a few smaller pieces. A friend of mine has something like that and every time he wants to move things around he's really sorry he got it. You can buy a nice small desk or two at any office or furniture store.
