Best home mixing environment - ideas?

Short of foaming the walls - what is the best condition for at home mixing?

The best? Probably mixing outdoors, if weather and circumstances permit.

Odd shaped room.

A room with actually a lot of stuff in it, to help abosorb and or bounce things in different directions.

An spl meter to help you find where and what frequencies you have building up.

Also, not mixing too loud. Less reflections and bass buildup I would think.

Some Ideas

If you are trying to keep your home looking like a "home" while at the same time set up a good mixing environment, here are a few things you can do.

Place items to help absorb sound in the room:
1) Place big plushy furniture in the room
2) Hang heavy drapes over windows
3) Hang tapestries over the walls

After that, you can use an EQ with an RTA on your monitors to further control the sound.

Some times it is hard to have your cake and eat it too.

See www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html

Foaming the walls is not a good idea.

Also, bookcases (full of books) make good diffusers.
