rackmounting a 424 mkIII
has anyone done this? is it possible, or is there another alternative? I am putting together a portable rig and would like to have the 4 track in there, too...

You could try just placing it in a rack drawer. I used one in a live rig to record shows and just used it out of a 4 space rack drawer.
