midi question

I want to start recording some guitar and midi stuff right to my computer. I don't know much about midi but it seems like I probably need a midi interface??? Can I use such a thing as a replacement for a better sound card? Is that it's purpose?

Some sound cards come with a midi in/out. I have a seperate midi interface. A little midiman 1x1 - works great.

there's a MIDI forum down below, with some very helpful people, it got me started in the right direction.
